There is a world of difference between the callow college graduate and the smart student who has had a year to scan papers in an office. And I'm sure that you could always have an interesting work related story or two for firms or anyone who cares to ask you about your life. It's a win-win situation. In fact, I'm not sure why so many people are intent on doing law school out of college, unless they're non-traditional students.
