General Board / Re: 4th tier law school success
« on: September 03, 2008, 07:40:33 AM »
For the record, Cleveland State is T3 and climbing.

I'll echo the sentiment of the earlier comments, schools can place in the third or fourth tier nationally but still place very well regionally.

I go to Cleveland state, for example. Though nationally it is a third tier school, within the City of cleveland, it is very well respected, has over a 90% bar passage rate, and places graduate with all the cleveland Biglaw firms, including Jones Day, Squires Sanders Dempsey. Most of the judges in this area also came from CSU, and csu grads serve on district courts, as well as the Ohio Supreme Court. That's not to say that its impossible to leave the area out of CSU, but it is certainly more difficult, in large part to the school's regional reputation.

National rankings are better at capturing the strengths and weaknesses of national programs, but they don't do a good job of describing the merits of regional programs.

« on: August 12, 2008, 06:19:39 PM »
I am going to be a 1L in about a week. I am buying supplements right now. Obviously, previous edition used supplements are alot cheaper. Am I ok going with these, or should I get the latest/new ones?

Thanks

Financial Aid / UG student loan advice
« on: June 21, 2008, 09:05:47 PM »
I will be going to law school on a full scholarship. I have about 44 thousand in existing loans, split between federal loans and private loans. The private loans are split between 3 different lenders, and total around 25 thousand. I gruduated in January so they are coming due soon.

What are my options for managing these? Would it be wise to consolidate the private loans and then forbear until law school starts?

If I forbear, what is the process i have to go through?

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. My concern is nothing guarantees me a higher salary at UC, but it does guarantee me a better academic experience and more opportunities. I am just not sure if those opportunities are worth 40k. Does anyone else have feedback?

I am trying to choose between UC and Cleveland Marshall. My stats 3.66/159 got me a full ride to Cleveland Marshall and $13,000 total for Cincinnati.

Cincinnati has the Urban Morgan Human Rights Program and some journals I really like, but it will cost me around 40-45 thousand to go there, my scholarship included. It is also ranked higher than CSU.

CSU places really well in Cleveland but overall is ranked lower and has no national reputation, but is a full ride.

What should I do?

Studying for the LSAT / Re: Higher LSAT or Double Major?
« on: December 06, 2007, 07:08:50 AM »
I am going to dissent with the rest and argue for the double major.
If you continue studying at your current pace, you are guaranteed to get a double major. However, even if you devote all your resources to studying for the LSAT, it may not result in a higher score. After all the studying in the world, you could mess up one logic game or a RC section and lose that several month investment that could have gone toward a double-major. So the double major is the safer bet.

Studying for the LSAT / Need some retake advice ASAP
« on: September 24, 2007, 05:09:17 PM »
So on the June LSAT I received a 159. I took a princeton review class prior to the exam and practice tested 156 159 159 162. I signed up to retake in September, but I haven't really studied since June. It;s not to late to ask lSAC for a refund. Is it even worth it going in? I have a 3.62 GPA and a strong personal statement.

For all the recent 1Ls, do you know what area of law you want to specialize in, and if so, when/how did you come to this realization?

Thanks.

Where should I go next fall? / Case Western or Cleveland Marshall with $$$
« on: September 01, 2007, 10:25:09 AM »
Hello,

I am going to apply to both Case Western and Cleveland Marshall. Judging from what people on lawschoolnumbers.com are reporting, with my scores (3.6 GPA and 159 LSAT) I can either count on a nearly full ride at CM or nearly full price at CASE (around 35 per year).

What would you guys do?
