Studying and Exam Taking / Finding hypos
« on: October 11, 2009, 08:01:37 AM »
Haldo, all,
Needing a bit of help with a little problem I'm having.  3 of my 4 professors have no previous exams on file - 1 is entirely new as a law professor, 1 is only filling in for a professor who was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer in July and 1 merely guards past exams with a vengeance not unlike that of Smaug in The Hobbit.  Seriously, there was a huge scandal when, one year, a student finally found one of his past exams and used it...Anyway, obviously, I'm going to need to modify my studying a bit for these 3 classes - I was planning on building my own exams.  However, I've also found that if I write the hypos myself, I obviously know where I'm going with them, so they're not really that useful.  Does anyone have any suggestions for resources where I should be able to find hypos to work on? I specifically need Contracts, Property and Criminal Law.  Also, anybody have any tips on putting together these hypos to make semi-realistic practice exams? I'm interested in both books and online stuff....Thanks in advance for the help!

General Board / Usefulness of print legal dictionaries?
« on: April 07, 2009, 10:02:56 PM »
Haldo,
I was just wondering - for those of you who are current law students, how important do you feel that print legal dictionaries are?  Should they be brought to class or left at home if they are used?  Is a pocket or abridged version sufficient, or is the huge version necessary, in your opinion?  Any thoughts?  Any other tools that you could mention that were useful to you?

General Off-Topic Board / What is important to you, cash or a social life?
« on: February 24, 2009, 10:24:34 AM »
Haldo,
As I was posting in some threads, I started thinking about the fact that many people on here are very intent on working in a bigger law firm, while many of us are planning on being perfectly content accepting a lower salary for better hours.  I wanted to start this thread to ask: Which is more important, a social life or a huge salary?  Why?

For me, I've decided to go with lower hours because I feel that, even if I am pulling huge salaries from the biglaw firms, I'll never have any opportunities to enjoy the money that I am earning.  If I spend all of my time at the office, sure, I may have 10 plasma TVs at home, but they would be sitting unused.

Your thoughts?

Where should I go next fall? / Questions about Moritz's quality of life
« on: February 20, 2009, 07:54:26 PM »
Haldo,
Another question to the assembled members of the forum..I recently received a very generous scholarship offer (one which is significantly greater than what my numbers alone deserve), and I was a bit curious about the quality of life in Columbus.  My parents are very concerned that my accent and background will make me look like a hick and put me at a disadvantage...I think that it's probably a vast overstatement, but I am curious - how would you all describe the quality of life in Columbus?  Any help would be appreciated.

Where should I go next fall? / AAAAAHHH!! Mercer v. Case? CHOICES?!
« on: February 19, 2009, 06:07:19 PM »
Haldo,
So, I'm all set to go to Mercer next year, when I open my inbox and get an offer from Case Western Reserve...Shockingly enough, they're offering me 22k per year, renewable without a GPA requirement.  I already have a full ride offer from Mercer, and am interviewing for their Woodruff Scholarship (an extra 5k per year) next week.

My goals:
My three possible end goals are to become a legislator, a judge or a law professor.  Each of these would be considered well after law school - most likely about 10-15 years after practicing.  Initially, I would like to work in either Internet/IP law or as a criminal prosecutor.  I do have a billable hour limit - I'd really rather not work for a biglaw firm.  What would YOU do?

Where should I go next fall? / Mercer questions
« on: July 01, 2008, 01:34:43 PM »
Haldo,
I'm looking through my lists of law schools, and I came across an interesting question.  Mercer has consistently ranked in the top 5 for Trial Advocacy and Legal Research and Writing, yet its overall USN&WR ranking is 100.  Why is this?  Are there any opinions about the quality of education at Mercer here?  What other skills do you feel are taught that might explain this discrepancy?  Is Mercer's ability to teach this skill so dismal as to drop it at least 90 points down the ranking, or does this illustrate a flaw in the rankings?

Law School Applications / Asking for application fee waivers?
« on: June 25, 2008, 11:07:56 AM »
Has anyone here called or e-mailed schools and asked for fee waivers?  If so, how did the schools respond?  Do you feel that this hurt your chances of admission there?  How did you go about asking?  Any information would be helpful.

Where should I go next fall? / Temple's location?
« on: June 18, 2008, 08:55:47 AM »
Haldo,
I had a very quick question for those of you who may have visited Temple - how is it's location?  I've heard from someone that I know that it is in a really bad part of town...but he also said that Drexel was a better school than UPenn.  ::)  Anyway, is it really that bad, or do you folks feel he's exaggerating?
