there are some straight-through-ers who got great firm jobs that pay &c.  i would suppose that the strategy of firms in hiring 1Ls for summer is to get a first crack at the people who show the most promise, so that they don't have to compete for those students during fall OCIP.  i'm not one of those people  :P, but i did fine interviewing for internships and ended up with my first choice.  actually, it would be a dream come true if i could just start working when spring break ends..

babs, you must just know all the forthcoming people ;) but really, i'm not surprised that some are struggling.  ANYONE should be fortunate to have something decent lined up for the summer, and as i'm sure is true across the board, those who were sending out resumes on 12/1/08 mostly benefited from it.  (i was waaayy too cracked out on outlining to even attempt this) but it's definitely not too late, especially for stuff like smaller firms and RA positions.

in times like this, as a straight-through-from-undergrad type, i have next to no idea what i'd say in a biglaw interview.

well i'm not the CDO or anything but i know a small handful of people who got biglaw, and then a larger handful of people who got "boutique" or midlaw paying close to market.

i'm sure this both very school- and market-specific.  at my school pretty much everyone i know was able to get the kind of job they pursued whether it was a judicial externship, a firm job, public interest, public sector, research assistantship - whatever.  (but you'll notice almost all of the types of jobs i listed pay little to nothing.  however, public interest / public sector jobs will be funded via a school fellowship.)

at this point i think very few 1Ls (here) don't know what they're doing this summer. of course, firm jobs are still challenging to get, but like i said everyone who really wanted to work for a private firm has ended up with such an offer.

but we're all definitely scared shirtless of OCIP, which is coming up way sooner than anyone really wants to think about.

yes.  and on days that are not the days before a final draft of a brief is due, i would even describe myself as "thrilled."

i think they fast-tracked our grades to try and make up for the construction nonsense (which is not that bad.  i actually kind of like looking into the "courtyard" and seeing huge machines rearranging these monumental piles of dirt.  sometimes i close my eyes and pretend i'm Siva).  anyway, what i really wish they'd do is start taking plastic in the freaking cafe.

wally, thanks?  anyway i found out today my property prof doesnt give a dang about lost/mislaid/abandoned; i believe her position on this when we discussed it today was "this area of the law is too subject to the idiosyncrasies of individual fact patterns, around which judges will mold their rulings in order to arrive at something that is fair to those particular parties.  just think about policy instead!"
