Studying for the LSAT / Re: 171 vs. 177, does it really matter?
« on: June 04, 2005, 11:47:55 PM »
With a 3.5 (or 3.6)/171, you won't get into HYS, though you will get into most T14's, and maybe one of CCN.

if those are your numbers, you should still apply to HYS.  it's not as cut and dry as amanda phrased it, esp with Y and S, where extras matter quite a bit more.  yes, most likely those numbers will be rejected, but i can think of several admits with approximately those numbers or lower.  look at LSN graphs to see how those applicants typically fare.

that was probably the first and last time that LSAC was generous.   :D

and i said that S and Y are "probably" the least numbers driven -- with Y, the ABA grids show that 3.75+/175+ still only has a 50% chance; chiashu gives a 4.0/180 less than a 70% chance at each S and Y (20% less than the next lowest chanced school); LSN graphs for both schools also show applicants with the highest numbers not getting into these two schools, moreso than for any other school i've seen.  not the most scientific study; just my general observation.  :)

i'm not saying it killed me.  but i think it kept me out of harvard (thus the comment about looking at my HLS hold letter).  stanford and yale are probably the least numbers-driven of all law schools.  i don't credit my LSAT score with keeping me out of the former or getting me into the latter.  for harvard, i think the two biggest things that kept me out were my LSAT score and my UG school.  a higher LSAT would have made them overlook the school, i think.

i was accepted everywhere else, yes, but my score was pretty high for everywhere else.  i was just echoing what someone else said at the beginning of this thread, that for the top handful of schools, it makes a difference, and everywhere else, a 171 and good GPA will get you in anyway.

Is there really any difference?  I'm an older student (not old!!! just older) and took the LSAT in 2000.  The score is now expired and I have to take it again to apply this fall.  I previously scored a 171 but think if I want to work my arse off, I can push the 175+ range.  I have a poor (but distant) GPA.  Do the admissions folks really differentiate much once you've broken that 170 barrier?  Would my time be better spent just working and preparing a stronger application?

Any thoughts/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hizzle

::looks at own LSAT score, looks at HLS "hold" letter::  yes, it makes a difference.

btw, thanks to the generosity of LSAC and the rules of rounding, my 171, at 98.xx percentile, shows up on my score report as 99th percentile.

TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!   ;D  :D  :)  :P  8)  ;D

okay, back to work.

fare thee well!

thank you!  we had a lovely party in the boardroom with more people crammed in there than i've ever seen (more for the free food and cake than for me, i'm sure, but that doesn't stop me from feeling special).  i'm a bit jealous of ann--i actually worked 1.25 hours of OT.  now i'm off for a celebratory dinner!

Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / Re: Waitlisted at Yale
« on: June 02, 2005, 11:41:04 PM »
i think it would be extremely unprofessional not to say something, even if it passes the date you gave on your WL letter.  with other schools, yes, you eventually hear something when the WL closes.  a friend of mine got a letter from stanford once classes had already started at penn informing him that he would not be accepted off the WL.  seems pretty typical.  it's not like they'll leave you hanging forever; again, that would be extremely unprofessional, IMO.

eventually everyone not accepted off the waitlist will be rejected from the waitlist, so it's not like it's unheard of.  word is that the class size right now is 201, a bit higher than they wanted, but not so high that they're worried about it.  bad news for the waitlist, though, as that means at least 11 people would need to change their mind about attending in the fall for the WL to start being used.   :-\

I don't know, Lanes gonna be starting Law school this fall as well.  Where are you going pookster?  Are you going to be too good for us at the top of the ivory tower.

where as in which school?

(lane is catching up to me in posts!  yay!)

Does this put me in the running for the Yoda trophy?

indeed, it does!  brave and i think there should be a new nerd contest so i can pass down the trophy before i leave.  :)

Is that banana the trophy?

you realize it says sugar cane right under the picture, right?

Is that sugar cane the trophy?

nope.  yoda's my trophy cuz i'm a nerd.

Can I have the sugar cane then?

it's 4 years old, but you can get fresh ones in fiji.  good stuff, for those of you who've never had fresh sugar cane.  someone goes into the field and chops it off, then you suck the juice out of it.

that sounds dirty.   :-[
