Job Search / Re: mystery compensation

That's actually usually a good thing.  My compensation went up $200/wk from the previous year's.

Was this just to match new market salary?  I can't see the $160k mark being bumped up any higher than it is by Spring, but I guess they want to leave their options open.

From an offer letter...

"Compensation for the 2009 Summer Associates will be determined next spring."

Is the firm part of NALP?  My understanding is that they are bound by the 45 day rule if they are.  If they are not part of NALP then the 45 day rule is probably of no relevance.

Yes it is a NALP firm.

This was my understanding also, but apparently the NALP rules are merely guidelines and they don't have to follow them if they don't want to.

It's pretty shady that they aren't following the guidelines if they're members of NALP.  Given this, are you sure you'd even want to work there?  Ask for an extension.  Two weeks is far too little time for a decision that will affect the rest of your career.

Job Search / Re: Pre Labor Day Callbacks

Got an offer today from a pre-labor day big firm callback.

Had you followed-up at all or no?

Does anyone know if/when you are supposed to follow-up after a callback?

Not since an email I sent a day or two after the interview asking how long it might take to hear back (as I had forgotten to ask at the time).  A lot of people I've talked to have been experiencing significant time delays before getting offers for next summer (2-4 weeks), so it seems like this wait is now a normal thing.  However, I also got an offer today from a firm I just talked to this past Thursday.

We know.

I didn't.  Did you summer there?

Yes.  I had one very close to Labor Day.  I thought it went very well, but I have not heard back.  I am beginning to count it at a loss, even if they did have this Monday off.

I think that's pretty common for firms that don't participate in your school's OCI.  I've had several firms offer me interviews like that.  Only two firms have asked me to visit them for screening interviews rather than going ahead with scheduling "callback" interviews.

This isn't all that uncommon, I don't think - it happened to me with the firm I'll be working for when I graduate, and has happened to friends as well. It probably just means that your resume and transcript were strong enough on the surface that they're confident they're interested in doing the callback and so they're not going to waste time with the screening interview.

Do firms ever do phone interviews to screen before inviting you for a callback?
