Incoming 1Ls / Question about purchasing a Dell Latitude D610
« on: July 06, 2005, 10:18:26 AM »
After much consideration, I am purchasing a latitude d610.  Now that I'm attempting to order I'm faced with a few more options I don't understand.  I've tried to find the answers on Dell's site and online, but can't sort through all of the crap google returns.  I'm trying to decide on my processor, screen, and memory...
What's the difference between an XGA and SXGA+ screen?
And, I'm not sure if there would be a difference between a 750 (1.86ghz) and 760 (2ghz) processor?
I could get one of these:
-IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 750 (1.86GHz) 14.1 SXGA+, RADEON X300 [add $48 or $1/month1]
-IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 760 (2.00GHz) 14.1 XGA, Intel GMA 900 [add $32 or $1/month1]
-IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 760 (2.00GHz) 14.1 XGA, RADEON X300 [add $80 or $2/month1]
Finally, what's the difference between 1 DIMM and 2 DIMM?

I realize this might be a pain to answer, but if anyone has any insight please let me know!

Thanks for all of the replies.  Duke offers dell latitudes at the computer store, but they aren't much cheaper than the online price.  So, purchasing with the $400 coupon for latitudes would be more cost effective.  Duke's computer store won't service inspirons, and only recommends we purchase latitudes.  That's enough for me to buy a latitude.  A $400 coupon is still great, but sometimes Dell runs great promotions on their website.  I was hoping I could find a coupon on par with the ones available for inspirons, or hold out of a better deal online.  Considering it takes 1-2 weeks to build the computer, I don't think I'm going to be able to wait until the end of July.  I think I'll keep checking online until mid July, then suck it up and buy the computer:)

Dell has had the same deal on the latitude laptops for what seems like weeks.  Does anyone know how often they change?  I'm not sure if they change every x amount of weeks, but if anyone has noticed please let me know.

Also, I remember reading a post in which someone mentioned that Dell offers great deals in the month of July... can anyone verify this?  I'm wondering if I should wait a few weeks to purchase my laptop.

Hi James!  What apartments are you looking at?  My roommate (another girl I met at Duke's open house) decided on Alexan Place since many other law students live there.  It's a really nice complex and a close drive to campus.

Perhaps I was a little bias when I attended admitted students weekend because I had already decided, but I loved it!  I thought the weekend was great.  The law building was really, really impressive.  The classrooms were state of the art, the library was huge, and they are in the middle of a large renovation that should be done by this fall (cross your fingers).  The faculty was all friendly, incredibly intelligent, very welcoming.  Probably the thing they stressed the most was the power of a Duke degree, which made everyone feel really good.  They were talking about the potential of your degree for working anywhere in the world, they had previous students from several lines of work there to talk with us.  The other aspect I really liked was how close their students seemed to be.  Many students talked about the "family" they had found at Duke.  I could go on, but really everything seemed great.  The campus is also beautiful.  The one down side mentioned was Durham itself.  Many people talked about how Durham, as a city, isn't really that great.  But, that you don't have that much time to enjoy it.  I guess a lot of people go into Chappel Hill to go out.  If you have any specific questions, let me know:)

Hey Tim!!  I posted a few days ago wondering if anyone else was headed to Duke, but didn't get any responses.  There must not be many on this board.  I will be doing to Duke in the fall!!  Have you looked on the Duke webboard?  There is some talk of apartments there.  I attended the admitted students weekend and several current students recommended Alexan Place apartments.  I guess a lot of law students live there and at Pinnacle Ridge.  I went and looked at both of those places, and personally liked Alexan Place a lot better.  My roommate and I got a great deal- a 2 bedroom for $800/month.  The apartment is only 1-2 years old, has a small gym, swimming pool, car wash (who really needs that!), really nice apartments, etc.  I love it.  It's also a 5-10 min. drive to campus.  I look forward to meeting you:)  I'm really anxious to get my section and class assignment (I am really a dork and want to start doing a little studying!)

Anyone else heading to Duke?  I've been trying to keep my eye out, but haven't seen anyone else?  Just wanted to say hello:)  Doesn't seem like the student web board is very active...

Thanks for all of the responses.  I still am really partial to the latitude.  I think I might just shell out the extra money.  It seems like it is a great machine.  Perhaps dell will have an awesome sale in the next few weeks (better than the coupon)- someone mentioned they had good sales in July....!

I've read a bit on both and the latitudes are supposed to be built on a stronger platform.  I think someone mentioned in a previous post that the latitude components were tested quite a bit while the inspiron components were new technology (so more likely to have flaws).  Basically, it sounds like the latitudes have fewer problems because they are designed for rigorous business computing.  Also, it seems more schools are recommending latitudes over inspirons.  I'm no expert on this, I've just sort of got the gist over some internet reading.  If anyone can offer a better opinion, please do....

Hey everyone.  I'm planning on purchasing a Dell Latitude 610.  Does anyone knwo much about this computer?  Anyways, I thought I would be able to get a $750 discount because of all the people mentioning the coupons on here.  However, the coupons all seem to be for inspirons.  Anyone know about coupons for the latitude?
