well, at one point there was a $400 off coupons for latitudes.  it has since disappeared.  very frustrating.  yesterday, the dell site was giving $500 off the latitiudes.  I was all ready to purchase, then decided to wait until today, now it's only $270 off.  i'm going to check every day for the next week for something better, if nothing comes, I'm just going to order.  for the last month it's been $270 off, so hopefully that's not going anywhere...

i tried to order a latitude but they said i cant unless my school has a deal with them or unless my business orders one..

how did you guys get it?

did you try to order online?  i haven't gone through with my order, but i've gotten all the way to the purchase page with no problems... i would try just telling them you're a law student.  duke recommends the latitude d610 above the others, i would assume your school would recommend it as well

It's a piece of darn although it says inspiron on the label.

Wow, sorry to hear that.  How old is it?  I've always had dells, and have been very happy with them.  I have an Inspiron 8200, a few years old and still is great.  Mine gets a little warm on the bottom, but definitely not hot (it actually feels nice during the winter!).  I've definitely heard of some bad dell experiences though.

Yeah, you won't need the 2gh unless you plan on playing some kick@ss games during class.

Also, something to consider, make sure it has proper fans/heatsinks. My Dell (600m) heats up like nobody's business. If i have it on my lap, i pretty much fry my sperm after 30-45 minutes of typing. And because it heats up so much, i'm constantly saving my work because i'm paranoid it'll crash. Just a thought...

Is the 600m an inspiron or latitude?  I'm thinking it's an inspiron??  Apparently the latitudes go through quite a bit more testing than the inspirons (at least from what I've read), so hopefully it won't be a problem....

Thanks so much for these explanations!!  So, it looks like I should be getting an SXGA+ screen, 2 dimm (because I'll never need to upgrade), and the 1.86 processor:)  That does save some money.  Thanks again!

After much consideration, I am purchasing a latitude d610.  Now that I'm attempting to order I'm faced with a few more options I don't understand.  I've tried to find the answers on Dell's site and online, but can't sort through all of the crap google returns.  I'm trying to decide on my processor, screen, and memory...
What's the difference between an XGA and SXGA+ screen?
And, I'm not sure if there would be a difference between a 750 (1.86ghz) and 760 (2ghz) processor?
I could get one of these:
-IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 750 (1.86GHz) 14.1 SXGA+, RADEON X300 [add $48 or $1/month1]
-IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 760 (2.00GHz) 14.1 XGA, Intel GMA 900 [add $32 or $1/month1]
-IntelŪ PentiumŪ M Processor 760 (2.00GHz) 14.1 XGA, RADEON X300 [add $80 or $2/month1]

Finally, what's the difference between 1 DIMM and 2 DIMM?

I realize this might be a pain to answer, but if anyone has any insight please let me know!

Thanks!

Thanks for all of the replies.  Duke offers dell latitudes at the computer store, but they aren't much cheaper than the online price.  So, purchasing with the $400 coupon for latitudes would be more cost effective.  Duke's computer store won't service inspirons, and only recommends we purchase latitudes.  That's enough for me to buy a latitude.  A $400 coupon is still great, but sometimes Dell runs great promotions on their website.  I was hoping I could find a coupon on par with the ones available for inspirons, or hold out of a better deal online.  Considering it takes 1-2 weeks to build the computer, I don't think I'm going to be able to wait until the end of July.  I think I'll keep checking online until mid July, then suck it up and buy the computer:)

Dell has had the same deal on the latitude laptops for what seems like weeks.  Does anyone know how often they change?  I'm not sure if they change every x amount of weeks, but if anyone has noticed please let me know.

Also, I remember reading a post in which someone mentioned that Dell offers great deals in the month of July... can anyone verify this?  I'm wondering if I should wait a few weeks to purchase my laptop.

Hi James!  What apartments are you looking at?  My roommate (another girl I met at Duke's open house) decided on Alexan Place since many other law students live there.  It's a really nice complex and a close drive to campus.

Perhaps I was a little bias when I attended admitted students weekend because I had already decided, but I loved it!  I thought the weekend was great.  The law building was really, really impressive.  The classrooms were state of the art, the library was huge, and they are in the middle of a large renovation that should be done by this fall (cross your fingers).  The faculty was all friendly, incredibly intelligent, very welcoming.  Probably the thing they stressed the most was the power of a Duke degree, which made everyone feel really good.  They were talking about the potential of your degree for working anywhere in the world, they had previous students from several lines of work there to talk with us.  The other aspect I really liked was how close their students seemed to be.  Many students talked about the "family" they had found at Duke.  I could go on, but really everything seemed great.  The campus is also beautiful.  The one down side mentioned was Durham itself.  Many people talked about how Durham, as a city, isn't really that great.  But, that you don't have that much time to enjoy it.  I guess a lot of people go into Chappel Hill to go out.  If you have any specific questions, let me know:)
