Law School Admissions / worth it to wait for fall semester grades?
« on: June 19, 2007, 02:41:36 PM »
I'm sure this has been asked a million times before, but I never have been able to figure out the search, so here goes.

I had a rough time in my first year and a half, so my current GPA is pretty bad (3.12). However, the last two semesters have been good (3.75 in the spring) and I have no reason to think I won't do well this fall - I finally figured it out, if you will. Assuming I do well, I could potentially enter the 3.2 range overall after the fall.

My question then is whether or not to wait to see how the semester goes before applying. I had always planned to apply as early as possible to take advantage of the benefits of being one of the first in line, and hopefully my LSAT score will carry the day anyway (practice avg was 176, took the June). However, I'm thinking about it and wondering whether the benefits of early application submission would be outweighed by a (potentially) higher GPA in the winter. I obviously have no guarantee of improvement, but it seems like a "risk" that might pay off.

Anyone have an opinion? Thanks!

but since my gpa is a flat 3.0 and my practice lsat scores have been consistently breaking 170, not too many have the same numbers as I.

Wow, that came across awfully.

plus the fact that a lot of people are in this boat...

The original grade is always factored. Colleges have a record of your original grade, so LSAc will know of it.

But the original (as any) grade is weighted by the credits.  0 credits, 0 weight.

I don't see any other way they could factor it.

That would be, in a word, bull. I retook a few courses and all were counted. If you can get away with a better GPA just because of the way your college records it, that's unfair and inconsistent with how LSDAS counts GPA.

I still haven't forgiven them for their policy regarding A+'s (they count them). Baloney.

I understand what you're saying, but it does say 0.0 hours next to the original grade - are they just going to assume it was 4 credits? If so, that's kind of ridiculous - how do they know i wasn't taking it as a writing course (4.5 credits) the first time and just as a regular (4) the second?

Law School Admissions / LSDAS gpa with regard to a repeated course
« on: June 15, 2007, 01:55:36 PM »
I repeated one course in college, and I can't figure out whether or not the first grade will be factored into my LSDAS gpa. The letter is there, but because of my school's policy, the "hours" column lists 0, and there's no indication that it was ever a 4-credit course. Does this count as "units for the original attempt?"

I ask because the explanation from LSC as to how they handle repeats explicitly states that it will be omitted from GPA calculation "when the transcript does not show both the grade and the units for the original attempt." In any case, anyone have a similar experience? Thanks!
