Anyone committed to UR yet?

To Journeyman:

I am sick of the whining on the site but I overlook that because sometimes I come across the rare kid on this site who is less interested about a schools ranking and more interested in what kind of education I can receive at the school. Or even how did I feel when I went to the school for a tour. I get frustrated by the thought that the bottom line is the almighty dollar instead of what a person can do with the legal education that they receive in order to benefit society. Don't harp on the yale and harvard comparision so much because my point is that you have choices...so you should stop stressing. This is my second time applying to law school. And the first time I did not get into any. I would have killed to have amassed the selection that you have. Anyway my hope is that you listen to yourself and don't buy into the hype that is on this board. What school can offer you the education that you want instead of the job.

Sorry for the comments regarding W&L but when I visited the school I got a distinctive conservative vibe. Not that there is anything wrong with that....This personal experience is coupled with the various comments I have heard from current students. Anyway no offense intended. But as a pretty liberal person it was just not my slice.

Amen to most of what you said Jen. I do get the fact that this site is informative. But I keep thinking about my cousin who went to CUNY. Now if I had to pick a school based on academics and environment it would be either CUNY or Howard. The professors are cool and very intelligent. But a lot of people on this board would scoff at the school and the students. That sucks. I mean I really feel bad for the Cooley kids because they are judged before they even speak. Anyway where else are you applying? I only applied to two schools so my drama is pretty much ova.

Wow. What I don't get is that so many people have such a hard time deciding once they have been accepted. If you don't want to practice in Va then don't go to UR. Pick a school near where you eventually want to work. The formula is that simple. My mom's lawyer friend is a graduate of UR and he works for a big(quiet old skool and old money) law firm in Richmond. He told me when I first started applying to figure out where I wanted to be and pick my law school accordingly. That way during the three years you learn the area and get ready for the bar in that area. It really is not that difficult. Now if money is your issue then you are going to have to make some tough calls. For instance I got a pretty decent scholarship at a school in DC but I got into UR. I have not received my letter but I am banking on the fact that I will get no money. But what is important to me is being near my family. So I will bite the financial bullet and enjoy my time at Richmond. And a word to the wise regarding rankings. I have visited several schools throughout the years. Schools that range from Harvard to Cuny Law(NYC). They all teach you the same stuff. It seems to me that higher ranked they are the biggest pricks they have in attendance. Richmond to me is a good combination of "old money" and a little humble pie. Most students don't try to act like they are too big for their britches.

Yes it is worth it. The first time I took the LSAT I scored a 145 and I applied to 8 schools and got roasted. I felt so bad. So I got extra proactive. I targeted the school that I wanted the most(Univeristy of Richmond). It is right down the street from me. I then took the kaplan(the class was a waste but the materials were invaluable). Some girl in the class told me how some chick with a 148 interviewed with someone on admissions and got in. So I emailed the dean and asked for some time to talk. We had a face to face and I basically kept in touch with her every step. When I increased my score to 156 I emailed to let her know. A month after that I emailed her again letting her know of my continued interest. One day I panicked. I said there has to be some other school that I could get into that I would feel proud to attend. So at 1 am on a january morning I sent in my application to Howard. I got in and was elated. I had pretty much given up on richmond until yesterday. Man when I got the call from the dean I was elated. I don't know what kind of law I want to practice and I don't know where this degree will take me but you can do so much with a law degree. I have two cousins with law degrees and they don't practice traditioanl lawyering but they are happy with where the degree has taken them. So now that you are in do not second guess your perserverance. Just do the dang thing.


Undergrad GPA: 2.8
Grad GPA: 3.5
LSAT: 145 and 156
