Choosing the Right Law School / Re: Michigan + $49,000, or Chicago?
« on: July 12, 2008, 10:38:35 AM »
I've never heard of anyone getting shot heading home from the quad in Ann Arbor.

OK, that's kind of unfair.  Both schools are fantastic.  Marginally-to-significantly better chances at academia/clerkships from Chicago than from Michigan.  More externship type opportunities too, being in Chicago instead of Ann Arbor.

The schools couldn't be more different in terms of character.  Visit both (though it's hard now when it's just summers here and probably no one in Chicago) and see where you get the better vibe.

Hey!  What do you mean, "just summers?"  What more do you need?   :o

Eh.  It'd be more fun for them to come when everyone's back, and the summers, who had the run of the place for a few months, suddenly feel like the low (wo)men on the totem pole, shocked that they no longer have control of the asylum.  Then the summers start looking around for someone to feel superior to, so they look down upon the new 1L's.  But the new 1L's are being pampered and payed attention to, and the summers resent this even more.

Just you wait.

you two are going to make amazing roommates...or kill each other.  it could go either way.  f-ing hilarious

It's been happening for a year already.  I buy Apple TV.  Blave cleans my bowl of caesar salad when I leave it in the fridge for five weeks after a busted I'll-cook-you-dinner date (my second end-of-relationship "3rd date i'll-cook-you-dinner date" of the semester.)

Seems to work.

Guy from TV: So, a lot of dust in that old 1925 wooden house you're currently renting, huh?

****BONG!!!!****

Guy from TV: Have you ever had a vacuum in your house for more than 181 days in any calendar year and, if so, have you ever used it after dinner?

That makes me laugh and also makes me want to kill myself.1

1 - This is a joke.  Please don't call anyone.

I'm tired AND I don't want to go to sleep.

The starving children in Darfur have bigger problems. Take 3 Advil PM and call me when you've paid our security deposit.

I had a chat with Bluber today.  I'm dropping it off on Friday.  He left a message saying, in a somewhat odd tone, that "Blave's father said that he didn't control you."  Amazing.

I still can't believe I put down a home phone number. He also has my cell phone since he left a stern message there as well. Gotta love the Blubers and their fun-free apartments.

(This is for the benefit of the others (obviously)).

Our new apartment building application had an essay component with questions like:

It's 10:00 and your neighbor complains that your stereo is bothering her.  What will you do?

Are you the kind of person who likes to have lots of visitors?

Do you or your roommates have a vacuum cleaner?

Rate yourself as a housekeeper (a) clean (b) average (c) poor

Do you want an apartment where you can have a "loud" or "large" party without feeling that you are breaking the house rules?

leading, i think

Good thing we loaned out our vacuum cleaner for so long it started to feel like we didn't own one.  Made the lie detector test that much easier.

Wait, weren't we supposed to answer yes?  Or "Yes, but it's on a special timer that only operates during the day."

On the radio question, what would you do, I wrote "apologize," but never actually said I'd turn it down.  Shrewd?

I'm coming out to CA in a few weeks.  Dinner in LA on Friday (my dinner w/ Kozinski), friends in San Diego on Saturday, then I'm going to fly up to San Fran and tool around San Francisco and Palo Alto Sunday and Monday.

It is lame-o McLamerson that I will not be there. Are you exploring on your own? Checking out firms or just getting the lay of the land?  I can come up with Palo Alto suggestions if you have time down there and want suggestions about what to do. It may be a soccer mom suburb, but there are some nice things to do.

Yeah, I kind of do.  I will be on my own.  I'm going to make sure I'd be okay with it, before I go overboard on SF on my final bids, which are due a few days later.

I e-mailed a few firms that aren't coming to OCI today to see if they wanted to meet me on Monday, but if no one bites, I'm just gonna tool around.

I've done a lot of San Fran touristy stuff, but I'm going to look more at taking the train, neighborhoods, stuff like that.  I'm also gonna check out Palo Alto, look at where firms are, check out downtown, that kind of stuff.
