If you know you wouldn't be happier doing anything other than being a lawyer, then it's worth it.

I support the boycott on the grounds that it's completely flawed and encourages otherwise intelligent students to wet their pants while deciding between a school ranked #85 and #95, or #20 and #26, or tier 3 and tier 4 when in reality there's NO F**KING DIFFERENCE!

Very true.

And now I'm a racist?  You're an interesting guy, I'll give you that...

Please leave me out of this, especially when you're tossing around your insults.  I would have never gotten involved if I had known what an ass you planned to be about the whole thing.

That the confederate flag stands for racism is your interpretation.  Period.  My interpretation differs from yours.  The only way we can even have this discussion in absolutes would be to throw out personal prejudices and ask why it was made in the first place -- and the answer is states' rights.

Paper:  You're just being a male private part now.  If you want to see racism as the only element of southern heritage worth talking about, go ahead -- I have nothing further to discuss with you if that's your mentality.  However, if narrow-mindedness is your problem with southern culture in general, I suggest you look in the mirror.  The fact that you take the culture of an enormous sect of people and choose a single aspect while ignoring some things that just might not be all that bad is the very definition of narrow-mindedness.

Clemson sucks!

haha, j/k man. I'm a gamecock fan :)

Damn, I'm really sorry to hear that!

I never claimed to be progressive beyond my stance on racism--I would consider myself a non-religious conservative if I had to describe my own views.  I can't believe that you would resort to a personal attack!  Very mature of you, sir.  Are YOU a racist?  I have made it pretty clear that I am not, so I can't really see what your problem is with me other than the fact that I don't want to sling mud along with you.

WRONG!  Did you even read my last post on the subject to you ???  "even you admitted that your Southern pride in your heritage is selective--choosing to conveniently ignore the racist aspect of it that still permeates throughout SC today." Southern states rights consisted of (among other things) slavery and white supremacy.  Quite frankly if after all I have posted on the matter...the only thing you can tell me "throw out personal prejudices."   Then you are SELECTIVELY interpreting my posts.  Just like you are SELECTIVELY choosing the parts of Southern Heritage that appeal to you.  Personal prejudice my ass.

On top of that, you just upright ignore my question about  resolving this SC racial issue!

Why the hostility?  I'm just talking on a message board, I didn't know I would offend anyone by not addressing every single point.

I don't IGNORE racism or its history -- if I did that I wouldn't be responding in this thread.  I have said several times that I think it's completely deplorable.  What I don't do is take pride in it.  I told you the reasons that I take pride in being southern, and I think they're pretty good reasons if those are the sorts of things that interest you.  Through all of this, it's almost like you're ignoring the fact that slavery existed north of the Mason-Dixon Line too.  And even after that, you're sorely mistaken if you believe that racism stopped after abolition (and if you believe it doesn't exist there today).  You hate SC, I get it.  You don't like the south, I get that too.  But those are personal prejudices.

No, obviously I didn't know that your grandmother is white.  I also don't think that's relevant.  My father is filipino, and he went to The Citadel.

How did he feel about racial attitudes there?

He and I have never talked about that before, but he still wears his class ring if that tells you anything.

I sense a little more hostility in your responses than I did before, and I don't want to be a part of this escalation.  Thanks for discussing it to this point, but I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

I'll assume these are genuine questions and not a setup for you to blast me ;)

I separate the two because I choose to.  It's really that simple.  I'm proud to be southern.  I'm proud of my accent, college football, good weather, sweet tea, the fact that barbecue and a cookout are not the same thing, southern belles, country music, hospitality, shag dancing, low cost-of-living, saying "yes ma'am" and "y'all," and the fact that I don't have to wear gel in my hair and go to dance clubs to get laid.  Among other things...  I'm not proud of slavery or the fact that it lasted longer down here than elsewhere, nor am I proud of the fact that fundamentalist right-wingers get to pass laws that try to force me not to drink on their holy day.  It's a simple personal distinction that I make, but the fact that one unforgivable evil existed does not mean that I should ignore all of the things that there are to love about the south.

While I don't like Nazis, I admittedly don't know a whole lot about life in 1930s/40s Germany and couldn't tell you if there were redeeming parts of the Nazi lifestyle.  If there were, then I guess I'd have a hard time arguing against someone who had Nazi pride given that they disapproved of the Holocaust and world conquest.

I really appreciate your candid response.

As for if the south had won the War of Northern Aggression ;)...  I think that abolition would have happened anyway, it would have just taken longer.  Given time, I think that societies progress beyond barbarism on their own.

Right.. However, based on SC’s resistance during/post reconstruction, segregation and even today, I think it would've been MUCH later...

Not sure how much later "MUCH later" actually means, but I think it's a valid argument to say that slavery lasted longer in the south to begin with because the economy was still predominantly agrarian.  I would be willing to bet that if we had a time machine that allowed us to play out these hypotheticals, slavery would not exist in the latter-half of the 20th century.  Sure, that's too long, but so was the time it took to disappear in the north.

I don't have any delusions of changing your mind about southern culture, but if nothing else, I hope that in all of this I've at least proven to you that there are southerners who are proud of that heritage who are reasonably forward-thinking and not racists!
