Where should I go next fall? / Re: Penn State

Hello,

To add to the housing conversation, here's a list that DSL provides. http://www.dsl.psu.edu/prospective/newaptlist.pdf

I would say the average rent for a 2-3 bedroom house in Carlisle is probably about $800/month, depending on the area (kilroy, would you agree with this?). You can find an apartment for $500-600. There's a complex called Carlwynne Manor that's pretty convenient to both locations. It's very easy to get to the transitional building from there. http://www.depaulmanagementcompany.com/properties/carlwynne-manor/overview.htm

Law School Applications / Re: Accepted TODAY !!

Hmm I didn't apply to PSU, primarily because it was in Carlisle. My parents live near there, but across the Maryland line. It's no place for a law school- I'm not sure they even have a Walmart. I couldn't believe their law school was in Carlisle. If not in State College, fine, and there's a lot of law schools in the Philly area, but why not Harrisburg? Pittsburg? I think moving the law campus is a good decision- but you said splitting... are they making 2 law campuses a la Rutgers?

Haha oh, goodness - yes, there is a Wal-Mart - in fact, there's even a TARGET! But as a lawyer, you hopefully won't be working at those places  ;) jk...seriously though, Carlisle is close to Harrisburg for state government options and other kinds of externships, and there really are things to do in Carlisle. I live in the area and would be happy to tell you all about Carlisle if you're interested. In my opinion, State College seems like a much worse place for a law student due to the lack of nearby externship opportunities, but that's just me.

That was very helpful, Kilroy - thanks! Nickeldime, I'm actually from the south-central PA region, so I can tell you a lot about the campus and the Carlisle area. What do you want to know? I'm a bit biased I guess, but I think Carlisle is an adorable historic town. The transitional building for DSL is pretty nice, except it's right along a major road (called the "miracle mile" - it's the stretch between 1-81 and 1-76 where all the truck stops are...) The actual campus is really pretty though.

This is actually the topic of much debate right now...

I expect that law schools consider ethnicity to be a self-selected category. While the government has strict guidelines, most schools probably do not.

CRAP!  I could have applied to both Widener campuses for free if I'd gotten my app off by 12/31...now it's $60.   >:(  Still it's kinda cool that you can apply to both campuses with one app (apparently).

I think the 12/31 fee waiver was just for paper apps - they made all online apps free though, no matter when you apply.

Oh yeah, the degree does travel outside of PA, especially into Jersey, Maryland, VA and DC.  We have a semester program in DC actually.  And, if the stats are right that career services gave me last spring, only 52% of the class of 2005 stayed in PA.  The rest work outside the state.

Thanks Kilroy. Which campus do you attend? Anything we should know?  :)

Law School Applications / Re: Anyone heard from Penn State?

Does anyone know what schedule Penn State is on as far as requesting new LOR's from LSAC? My second LOR has been there for a week, and it's the only think I need to be complete, but PSU still doesn't seem to have requested it (or rather, LSDAS still doesn't appear to have sent it).
