Over 500,000 deaths in the US last year because of heart disease. Let's ban all fatty foods, close all the fast food restaurants, arrest people who eat butter.

This is the only argument I need to make--I have the God-given, inalienable, Constitutional right to bear arms. I have the right to defend myself, my loved ones and my freedoms against those who would take them away. If you want statistics, go to the NRA's website. Criminals don't obey laws--that's what makes them criminals. Signs saying "No guns allowed" won't stop criminals from carrying/using guns--they only stop people who obey rules and laws. Sorry if you think wanting to defend oneself is absurd. Frankly, I find the counter to be the absurd position. 65

I'm OK with it now--at 45 I'd better be! But it was kinda rough for the first year. I'd look in the mirror every morning and wonder who the hell I was.  I eventually found my birthmother (birthfather was dead), but we never developed any kind of relationship. She told me I was immediately taken away from her at birth so she didn't even know if I was a boy or a girl. I found out I was adopted by mistake: My adoptive father was dying (mother was already dead--15 years before) and during a meeting with me his doctor made an innocent comment about how alike Dad and I were, even though I was adopted. Huh? Poor doc felt like a schmuck, and I was so mad about having been lied to for 29 years that I stormed over to the hospital to verbally assault Dad while he lay dying. (Not one of my prouder moments.) OK, I'll stop hyjacking the thread now. 66

I'll bet I'm the only gay person on this board who will say this: "You can take my GUNS from my cold, dead hands." I have hunted deer with shotgun, crossbow and muzzleloader, and every one was taken ethically, legally and eaten with gusto. I own guns, have my concealed carry license (Ohio), and am proficient in the use of my Kimber CDP .45. Taxes that I pay on guns and ammunition go to state and federal programs protecting wildlife: http://www.fws.gov/laws/laws_digest/fawild.html I have the inalienable right to defend myself and my loved ones against those who would attempt to take our lives and our freedoms. That said, I am not a "gun-nut," nor do I brandish or use my firearms in acts that bespeak twisted displays of anger. I am just as disturbed by the events at Virginia Tech as others on this board. But taking away my guns, as well as the guns from every other law-abiding gun owner, will not solve this problem. A legally armed citizen being able to use their concealed carry weapon might have helped minimize the number of lives lost. No, this is not to advocate a "Wild West" type of scenario. I fervently hope I NEVER find myself in such a horrific situation. But I would rather have the chance to fight back and possibly stop the gunman than die knowing I could've done something to stop the bloodshed, but was prevented from doing so because of gun control laws that only controlled me, not the gunman. Frankly, I view gun control as a way to keep women and minorities--including gays and lesbians--from defending themselves.
