Tomorrow will be 5 weeks without a drop.  If that fails, I'll go to a meeting.

Congrats.  I wish I had your willpower.

...while acquiring all this debt, all this pressure to perform...

I don't get all this "debt fear" discussion.  After twenty years of managing multiple mortgages, equity loans, vehicle loans and student loans (all of which I've handled  on anywhere from $30K to $65K/year), I just don't understand the "big debt deal."   ???

Do you think you can do well enough in law school to get a job offer that will pay the bills with a little left over for savings/investment (not for partying or frivolous entertainment expenses)?  Then go to law school.  If not, get some other (cheaper) graduate degree (or none at all) and get a job commensurate with your education and experience.

Don't kill yourself over 1L year in law school.  I can think of better things for which to off yourself--none being economic or academic in nature.

Law school doesn't kill people; I kill people.

Guns don't kill people; people kill people.   :D

Well, I ain't afraid of dyin', it's the thought of being dead
I want to go on being me once my eulogy's been read
Don't spread my ashes out to sea, don't lay me down to rest
You can put my mind at ease if you fill my last request

(Chorus)
Prop me up beside the juke box if I die
Lord, I want to go to heaven, but I don't want to go tonight
Fill my boots up with sand, put a stiff drink in my hand
Prop me up beside the jukebox if I die

Just let my headstone be a neon sign
Just let it burn in memory of all of my good times
Fix me up with a mannequin, just remember, I like blondes
I'll be the life of the party, even when I'm dead and gone

(Chorus)
Prop me up beside the juke box if I die
Lord, I want to go to heaven, but I don't want to go tonight
Fill my boots up with sand, put a stiff drink in my hand
Prop me up beside the jukebox if I die

Just make your next selection, and while you're still in line
You can pay your last respects one quarter at a time

(Chorus)
Prop me up beside the juke box if I die
Lord, I want to go to heaven, but I don't want to go tonight
Fill my boots up with sand, put a stiff drink in my hand
Prop me up beside the jukebox if I die

Prop me up beside the jukebox if I die (Repeat line and fade)

I got that email, too, and know about 5 other people who also did.  Think about it this way -- if a school is so desperate for students that they're just sending out emails handing out spots and scholarships like candy, do you really wanna go there?  I don't know what your numbers are but mine aren't all that great so I figure this school must be really desperate if they're pulling this with me of all people.

I got $15K (also without applying) and hit the delete key after reading it.  I'd rather stay in Ohio and go to Cleveland-Marshall with a $4K scholarship than attend such a blantly for-profit law school in hurricane alley.

Public safety isn't a bad gig--the best parts are the pension and days off.  Full-time firefighters can start between $35K-$45K (northern states with strong IAFF local unions) and work only ten 24-hour days a month.  Promotable positions, while highly competitive and few in number, can bump the salaries up to $70K-85K base salary (again, depending on jurisdictions and collective bargaining agreements).

Most states have defined benefit pension plans that consist of 25 years of service with 50-60% of pay.  Some have an age requirement, some don't.  Many firefighters work second jobs on their days off--I know some guys who gross well over $100K/year by being a firefighter and holding a second job.

And none of it requires a college education.  A paramedic license helps, though, and entry-level jobs, like promotable positions, are highly competitive.

'Course, one has to go into burning buildings to do one's job.  And the EMS work has the potential to expose one to blood-borne pathogens like HIV and hepatitis, as well as illnesses that include TB, SARS, bird flu, and meningitis.

But the benefits are good and the pay is decent.  Tell me again why I'm giving it up to go to law school...   ???
