If you don't recognize me from the self-tar, I'm sure I'll be chatting with Hank and Bosco anyway! Oh, and I'll be wearing black and white Pumas I'm sure, I pretty much live in them.  Although if you find me by my shoes that would be kind of weird...

<=== flattered

And I'm sure your shoes are lovely!

Well, I mean, I do owe you a drink for your birthday. Does a free glass of wine at the wine mess count? Probably not...

Choosing the Right Law School / Re: Michigan vs UVA

I've actually been wondering what the differences are between UVA and Michigan also.  Both schools seem laid back and close in prestige and rankings.  I'm hopefully meeting with a friend who is planning to attend Michigan, so I'll try and get his impressions about the school.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if you can look at apartments then, but want to go with me Thursday morning? I have time to kill all day and don't want to be lonely  :(

Just RSVP'd and got my tickets- finally! I'm get into Midway early Thursday morning at 8:25 AM then I leave on Saturday at 5 PM, so it looks like I'll have to skip out a little early on Saturday.  I asked to stay with a student host so I'm hoping that I'll be able to get an idea of what the housing is like even though I'll miss apartment viewings on Saturday.

Bridge - I agree, a few of us were talking about that - hopefully the girls weren't looking at us and thinking the same thing about the guys.  By the way, I hope you're including berntie in that group of 2 or 3  ;)

Thanks Bosco! Great seeing you again- and figuring out who you were!

Love Duke! I'm feeling too lazy to type much, but the law school has a supportive environment and lots of opportunities to get involved. I also really liked the people I met there and the current students were very happy with their choice.

I'll be on a cruise for the next week but if anyone has questions about Duke compared to Columbia, NYU, and UVA, you're welcome to ask- it'll just take me a bit to get back to you.

The UVA Law web site indicates that most scholarships are decided on a combined basis of merit and need (I think that goes for the Dean's Scholarships).

My admit letter says "Your outstanding academic credentials and record of personal accomplishments have placed you in consideration for merit-based scholarship assistance and designation as a Dean's Scholar". I'm interpreting this to mean that Dean Scholarships are merit-based only. In any case I gave U Va very little to base a need-based decision on -- I only did my FAFSA a few days ago, even.

Getting the notice the middle of next week would be very irritating. I was hoping to go to the GW preview weekend being able to definitely say I am going there. As it is now it looks like I may not get it until during the weekend, if even by then.

At the last admitted students weekend, one of the financial aid people said that they had not yet determined scholarship amounts, largely because all scholarships are partially based on need.  But she also said that they assume all students have financial need and you don't have to even fill out a FAFSA to be considered for scholarships.  She said that since they can't give scholarships to everyone with financial need they use scholarships to their advantage and give them to people with higher GPAs and LSAT scores (with a few other things factoring in).

So basically, UVA's official position on scholarships is that they are partially need based.  In reality, need has nothing to do with it.
