George Washington U / Re: Rank at GW

Why?  There's no need. If you are top 10% you can get any job you want.  Even with top 1/3 you are pretty well set at GW.

Hell, I'm just outside of the top 1/3 and spent 1L summer working BigLaw and will spend my second summer working for a well-regarded Vault firm.

Sure there's a need: Clerkships.  I'm gonna be competing with top students from top schools.... need every edge I can get.  But I agree that it might not be a need for everybody.

When you apply for clerkships through Oscar, which is the majority of the clerkship applications, the school will release your actual percentage ranking.  You can see it then.  You are not allowed to share it with anyone or use it for any other job purposes though.  So, your concerns about clerkships are already addressed by the school (I think it may be a new policy as of this past clerkship cycle, it seemed like it anyway).  As for firms, I think with the quantity of apps they see, they have a pretty good idea of where you fall within the range.  Good luck.

Awesome.  That's great news... thanks.

How can anyone love UCC 2-207?  That's probably the most poorly written law I've ever read.

Damn.  They should have a top 5% designation.

For anyone at GW who knows: what's been the GPA cutoff to be 5-10% in the past? What GPA is virtually guaranteed to be top 5%? (3.8? 4.0?) And is there any way to figure out your specific rank? (not just the rough top 15%-30% scholar designations).

General Board / Re: almost straight A's....now what?

"And I'd like to email the professors who gave me A's or A+'s and just say "I was pleased with my grade, I'd like to talk about the exam with you" or something of the sort, especially since I wasn't a gunner or active class participator. I would think they would much rather talk to me than the student's upset with their grades and it seems a good way to get job leads or connections but I'm just unsure how to go about it without sounding like an a-hole."

Yeah... I would wait a while before you did this.  The professors want to see the students who did worse first, because they're the ones that need the most help.  I had a professor this semester who told us that if we got an A not to bother her at the beginning of the following semester, and she seemed genuinely annoyed at students who did that in the past.

Of course, if you're planning to transfer to GULC early action, or any other school for that matter, you will need to get letters of rec from these profs.  That would be an excuse to go talk to them.

Transferring / Re: Transfering from USC to GULC
« on: January 18, 2009, 06:47:36 PM »
I would aim MUCH higher than GULC if I were you (i.e., the top 5 schools).  Don't sell yourself short; it looks like you have a solid shot at a top school.  Definitely apply to GULC early action... but if that's the only place you're accepted than you may have a tough decision ahead of you.  USC is a good school, and since you want to stay in LA you may be better off being at the top of your class there.  I don't know if GULC is worth it.  But if you got into somewhere like Stanford I think it's a no-brainer.

If I was top 15% at a T25 I would be aiming for the top 5 schools.  Apply to GULC early action, b/c that's probably a safe bet.  Just apply to the whole T14.

George Washington U / Re: IP Law At GW

I just got accepted to GWU and I was also accepted at Boston College.  I have been slacking and still have to apply to a few other schools, including Gtown.  I definitely want to go into intellectual property law, especially with having a science bachelor's degree.  Is GW my best east coast choice for IP?  Or is Gtown definitely better for IP because of their general ranking?  I've read GW is number 3 in IP.  Thanks for the feed-back.

If you're certain you want to do IP, I think it's a no-brainer to go to GW over BC.
