They are really very similar, as Towelie discussed earlier. I think a visit will really help you decide. I borrowed my cousin's audi and drove from D.C. to UVA earlier this fall, and it was damn fun to drive those curvy rural highways with the forests and fall colors. The town is somewhat not that great, but it is not bad. The Rotunda is cool, the people are nice, the school is off in a great and secluded area of the campus. Good architecture with recreational fields like .3 miles down the road. Umich seemed more centralized, but the law quad was an amazing thing to experience. I think I like Ann Arbor more, and I have heard better things about the undergrad (which is probably not very important). In the end, I ranked UMICH above UVA for the quality of the JD/MA programs. UMICH is like #3 in polysci, and if you summer start, you can finish both a MA and JD in 3.5 years (or so I am told). Last, I got a speeding ticket from the Fairfax County police when I drove back to DC, so the bad mojo started kicking in.
