Choosing the Right Law School / Taking UMich over Columbia???
« on: December 06, 2006, 08:35:54 PM »
Is it crazy to pick UMich with a small scholarship over Columbia with no scholarship?  I know Columbia is ranked higher, but i do not want to practice in NYC, and I am worried about cost of living.  Will it make a significant difference under the following circumstances??

1. Academia is a goal
2. Biglaw is a goal
3. Government is a goal
4. The midwest is a geographic priority

If you search LSN, you can prettty much see who won the Darrow last year.  It looks several winners were in the 169-173 LSAT range, so it looks like you would stand a great shot.  Good luck!

Looks like the Darrow winners had 3.9 ~ 4.0 GPAs. People w/ higher LSATs but lower GPAs seem to get the ~$50k scholarship.

What about the Dean's Scholarship?  I am guessing above 75%ile LSAT and close to 25%ile or above GPA?

Just received an invitation to apply for the Darrow.  I guess they'll be making the scholarship decisions beginning later this month?

How did you receive this info???

Choosing the Right Law School / Re: UVa vs. UMich

They are really very similar, as Towelie discussed earlier.  I think a visit will really help you decide.  I borrowed my cousin's audi and drove from D.C. to UVA earlier this fall, and it was damn fun to drive those curvy rural highways with the forests and fall colors.  The town is somewhat not that great, but it is not bad.  The Rotunda is cool, the people are nice, the school is off in a great and secluded area of the campus.  Good architecture with recreational fields like .3 miles down the road.  Umich seemed more centralized, but the law quad was an amazing thing to experience.  I think I like Ann Arbor more, and I have heard better things about the undergrad (which is probably not very important).  In the end, I ranked UMICH above UVA for the quality of the JD/MA programs.  UMICH is like #3 in polysci, and if you summer start, you can finish both a MA and JD in 3.5 years (or so I am told).  Last, I got a speeding ticket from the Fairfax County police when I drove back to DC, so the bad mojo started kicking in.

For William and Mary's Optional Essay, an event of which you are especially proud:

"Drunken Escapades: How I Conquered The Chick on Third Floor"

but dislike the "beauty queen at the parade" vibe

Oh, and since you asked, consider yourself shot for the OSU comment. :)

Shot at by a drunken cowboy who is addicted to inhalants?  I will take my chances.

"Why I Want To Go To Law School, Using Only Vowels"

Oh and, on an unrelated note to the original poster: it's really, really bothering me that you've misspelled Dirk Nowitzki's name in your username.

While it pains me to bother a UT football fan (considering all the tough times you've had these last few years)...the name is the result of a long and not interesting story, but it is spelled differently on purpose.  IT should annoy you more that announcers constantly mispronounce his last name either No-W-itzki or No-V-itzki depending on their usage of the german W (V).

I'd assume you mean these past few weeks, as UT football these past few years certainly hasn't been anything to be sad about.  :)
Yeah, sarcasm is hard online.  I was talking about the recent sports domination at UT.

I couldn't decide if you were being sarcastic or not, because these last few weeks have been quite rough in terms of football and basketball.  :'(

I am a firm believer in the grace period. If you win the national championship in the greatest final ever, you cannot complain for at least 5 years, even if you lose to A&M.  Just close your eyes and imagine being at Baylor or something and then be thankful you don't have to live in Waco and cheer for the papajohns bowl or something like that.
