3L job search / Re: Federal Government Honors Programs
« on: January 03, 2009, 06:44:01 PM »
Got a call last Thursday afternoon from one of the Regional Offices, wanting an interview the next morning  :o

That seems to be how they roll! It's like, "Hi, we'd like to interview you . . . right now." Good luck to you, too!

Any update, Jolie?

2L job search / Re: Grades Needed For Market Pay From Michigan???

Bouzie, I don't think that's true for Dallas and Houston as it is for smaller TX cities.

Smart bidding is a big part of OCI.  Just like applying for law schools, you need to bid on reaches, targets and safeties, which you figure out by looking at the document I mentioned.

Yeah, this has been a weird OCI year.  But the vast majority of people have jobs lined up, at market pay or in public interest.  There's a file you can find online on the school website (students only) that will tell you the range of GPAs of people each firm has hired, though it won't contain this year's data yet.  There are certainly firms that go well below median.

General Board / Re: Do Post-Exam Feelings Correlate Well with Grades?
« on: December 13, 2008, 08:57:37 AM »
I don't see any correlation at all in how I feel I did on a particular exam versus my grade.  That's the thing about curves.  How you did is only part of the equation.

General Board / Re: Does the second semester suck any less?

I never noticed any change in dynamics after grades came out.

Anyway, 2L fall sucks way, way worse than 1L for me.  Even my Christmas break I have school things I have to do. But I'm optimistic it will only be better from February on out for the rest of law school. :)

Depends on the course load at your school.  At Michigan, with taking 2-3 more credits second semester, it sucks way more.

General Board / Re: How Tough is 1L Hiring Going to Be?

I don't know... I think 1L job is probably usually neutral, like you say, but it has the potential to be a plus or a minus.  If you do something unique (which I sort of did), employers may find it intriguing.  More than caring about the work I did in particular, employers seemed to like that I thought outside the box in getting my job instead of going through the normal channels.

Law School Applications / Re: T14 v. T20 w/ Scholarship

In the same breath, isn't it alot more stressful when you have $150,000 in debt to worry about when you are looking for a job? I would take no debt, with very limited but still OK options, (GW) over the likelihood that I will hate my biglaw life, or the possibility that after taking out that much money, I may not want to go into big law or law at all.

This is how I'm playing.  Of course, I don't intend to pursue biglaw.  If biglaw is your absolute priority, then you have to go with the security of the T14.

The people who will get a full ride at GW don't generally pay sticker at T14.  There are middle ground options.  Even if you don't want to do biglaw, a lot of public interest jobs are extremely prestige-driven, and a lot of people are better off getting their JD from a top school and using the LRAP program to help with their loans.

You know, 1L finals are really stressful, at any law school.  But at top law schools, you know that the odds are extremely strong in your favor that, no matter how you do on any given exam, you can find a job.  I know people who have had sub 3.0 GPAs who will have or have had jobs they were very happy with.

I can't imagine how much mores stressful 1L would be at a school where that wasn't true.  And you really don't have to go very far down the rankings to find schools like that.

GWU is an awesome school, and the top of the class will have fantastic options.  And I'm sure you're very smart.  But so are many of your classmates.  Particularly in this economy, I would not advise anyone to throw away his or her safety net, which is what you would be doing.

We did the same thing for our buyers re: upping their offer price to cover closing costs.
