Law School Admissions / Re: HOFSTRA EMAIL A MISTAKE
« on: February 05, 2007, 06:03:54 PM »
I not only received an email apologizing for the error, but also recieved a phone call about 1/2 hour ago (8:30 pm) from the Dean of admissions apologizing for the mistake. While it may have been a screw-up to begin with, kudos to Hofstra for going the extra mile in apologizing. Everyone makes mistakes... it's how you make up for them that really tells the tale.

indeed the letter smelled bad....smelled like british food.

i don't think boston is known for its food - it doesn't have anything named after it like philly does (philly cheesesteak)  except maybe new england clam chowder, which is a bit gross IMO

How could you forget Boston Baked Beans? of course, the after effects of consuming said beans might not be the most favorable association with Boston...

Law School Admissions / Re: Hofstra - did anyone get this?

I'll bet it was because of this line...

If this is not a mistake, thank you very much. I look forward to taking a deeper look at the new website and all that Hofstra offers. If this is a mistake... :-(

It's all about the :-(.  How could they not take an extra minute and personally respond when they see a :-(   ?   It just begs for sympathy and compassion... let's just hope that the adcom sees the :-(  as well.

I got in, and all I submitted for my PS was :-(

Lol! Why did I waste my time with all those edits and re-writes! I knew I shoulda just used the power of the :-( !

Well, I got my response... not sure if it's the same generic one that they sent to everyone or if they really took the time to reply to my particular email. It sounds a little too official/neutral to be written specifically for me, but here it is...

Dear >>RobWreck<<<,

Recently you received an e-mail announcing the launch of our new website, which
referred to your acceptance.  I sincerely apologize for any confusion, however
this e-mail was sent in error.  Please note that although the new Web site is
now active, the Admissions Committee is currently reviewing your application.  I
will ensure your application is handled with the utmost care and will notify you
under separate cover when a decision is reached.

For your information, all admission decisions are released by postal mail under
the signature of the Dean or Assistant Dean for Enrollment Management.

If you have any questions regarding the status of your application, please feel
free to contact me directly, 516.463.4023. Again, I apologize for any confusion
this e-mail may have caused.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Sincerely,

Karen Vahey
Director of Admissions

Is this what everyone else got by means of an apology?

Choosing the Right Law School / Re: Hofstra Email
« on: February 05, 2007, 07:24:43 AM »
I just tried calling them about 5 minutes ago (10:20 am EST) and it the call went to voicemail. No real surprise there... I'd imagine that they are getting ALOT of phone calls this morning. Of course, they still haven't responded to the email I sent them Friday evening regarding this... I can only imagine how hectic it must be today in their admissions office. The worst job there must be the guy that has to tell people "Yes, we did accidentally send you an acceptance email, but actually your application was denied. So sorry..."  :'(
Rob

PS: I didn't recieve a second email this morning, so it is possible that they are only sending that second email to people that are already accepted to the school...

If you didn't actually send it yet, I before E except after C

Lol... I'm not too concerned about a common typo. If the email is accurate, I'm already in (I doubt they'll recant an admission due to a spelling error in a hastily-written email). If it's a mistake on their part, then it's ALOT BIGGER than just transposing "i" and "e" in receive...

Yeah, I really sent it. When/if I get a response from them, I'll post it up here as well. I'm a non-trad (35 yr old) with too much time out in the working world to play games with something this important. If they meant to send it, GREAT! :D If not, then I'm going to call them on it...

Damn, I knew I shoulda checked here first. :( Oh well... let's see how this turns out. I guess I know the response I'm going to get to the email I sent to their admissions office (text below)...
Rob

Hello,
I just recieved this email and would very much like to confirm that this was sent to admitted students only... that it's not some sort of terrible mistake that is getting sent to all applicants. It would be unnecessarily cruel to find out that this was mistakenly sent out as a general message. I raise this concern because my application was only sent to the admission's committee a few weeks ago and I have not recieved any sort of acceptance or rejection notification. My efforts to log into the admitted students section, per the instructions below, have yielded no success.
If this is not a mistake, thank you very much. I look forward to taking a deeper look at the new website and all that Hofstra offers. If this is a mistake... :-(
Sincerely,
>>SNIP<<
