Law School Admissions / Re: Introducing a Newbie

Lots of threads about this but the main thing I would suggest is to take tons of TIMED tests. Taking the test not timed is not very helpful. Practice taking real tests in the real amount of time allotted. Also, don't study for 6 months straight, you'll kill yourself.

I know "someone" very well who goes to Pitt and has been extremely frustrated by their Career Services help (or lack thereof) and the job search. It's been a bad experience as far as finding employment goes.

Can you elaborate on this a bit more in terms of how well they've done in classes and what specific type of employment they're looking for?

Do you know how they like the area itself?

Top half/looking for most any type of employment at this point (and her 2L year same story).

As far as the city goes though, she seems to like it fine. I have visited and it seemed good enough. One thing about Pitt though is that you can walk one block away from a fine area and get in a very bad area. That was the case near their place.

I am in a similar dilema.  Theyre offering me a decent amount of money but theyre 4.5 hours away and im almost certain I want to come back to the DC area.  However, the only DC school ive gotten into (so far) is Catholic with no money and theres no way in HELL im paying 50k a year to go to Catholic.  They kind of pissed me off actually...im above their medians but they didnt throw me anything. >:(

Also, i wouldnt take any one person's anecdotal experience as an indicator of how the whole office operates.  But I am sure that unless youre in the top 20% or so, you wont get a job through OCI.  However, there are other ways to get jobs than oci.

I agree not to take one piece of anecdotal evidence TOO much but at the same time, what are you comparing it to? Do you know anyone who has gone there and had positive things to say? I'm not saying it's a worthless school but yeah. Don't avoid the school just because of me but realize it has some problems if you're not top part of your class.

Slightly off topic but I remember hearing whispers of UT lowering its class size? Is this confirmed?

Also, any news on how much tuition will be next year?

I really hate his politics but I don't think he did anything impeachable.

At least not anything we have hard evidence of. It'd be a waste of time. Why not focus on real things like lowering federal interest rates for student loans?

If you want to work in San Diego, Miami, or Honolulu, sure. If not, no.

Another one to add is University of Pittsburgh and UHouston. Again, only if you want to live in Pittsburgh/western Pennsylvania or southern Texas.

UMiami graduates, for example, do have a slight advantage at BigLaw jobs over other T2s because Miami is a big BigLaw market, and UMiami is locally prestigous. However, if you have no interest in living in South Florida, don't go to UMiami. Same with UHouston and Houston. Miami and Houston are the only large, high-paying BigLaw market without a school ranked in T1.

Penn dives in and takes over most of the really good Pittsburgh jobs.
