A couple thoughts:
1. The US media paints South Korea as an eccentric and superstitious nation. I remember, for instance, a lot of stateside coverage of a Korean urban myth involving fans in closed rooms sucking the air out of said rooms and suffocating sleeping occupants. I have no idea if this characterization of the country is accurate. There are probably things in this country that seem silly to outsiders.
Some of the things being said about US beef seem to have some merit, but others are just off the wall (Americans only eating beef from <3 year old cows, etc.)
2. When talking about US military bases in Iraq, it's important to remember that, even when their presence seems benign and necessary to Americans (as most Americans probably view our bases in Korea), they're often resented as imperialistic in foreign lands.
