Transferring / Total Wildcard?
« on: April 18, 2010, 06:35:07 PM »
I am in a peculiar situation in my law school career and am looking to transfer.  I recently withdrew from law school during my 2L 2nd semester due to a tragic event in my personal life.  I'm at a T4 school somewhere in the top 25%.  My cumulative GPA is not stellar due to a poor 1st semester GPA (didn't figure out IRAC) but my cumulative GPA improved by 0.4 two semesters later and have made dean's list since.  Wrote-on law review (2nd best casenote), published, and one of my arguments have been quoted by a law professor in a law review article.  I see that people on here from T4 schools are usually in the top 5% when transferring to a T1.  Because of the conflict between my bad class rank vs. strong soft factors, I think it's a wildcard if I shoot for T1.  Any comments on my chances at Georgia, Alabama, Illinois, or maybe a T2 like Georgia State?

General Board / Ask Judge for Fewer Work Hours???
« on: September 24, 2009, 01:08:26 AM »
I'm a 2L.  I very recently (3 days ago) landed an internship position with a local circuit court judge.  I am very excited about the opportunity but he has me scheduled for 17 hours a week.  Normally that isn't much of an outside workload for a 2L, but I am also currently working on a law review article for publication and had just been offered a spot on the trial advocacy team.  I can handle writing the article and working the 17 hours a week, but there's no way I would be able to do trial advocacy.  I am thinking about asking him to cut my hours down to around 8 hours a week, but do you think that's a good idea?  Would I offend him?

Studying and Exam Taking / Kicking Myself
« on: May 12, 2009, 01:22:57 PM »
I just took my contracts final, and I found out most of my classmates spotted frivolous contracts defenses and then explained why they didn't apply.  Ugh...I only brought up the relevant defenses where the party at least had a chance of winning with it in court and analyzed it from there.  For example, people were bringing up the defense that the contract might be unconscionable because a baseball player was broke so he had to sign a $66 million dollar contract.  Then they explained why the defense wouldn't work because $66 million dollars is not substantively unfair.  Captain obvious!  Was it even necessary to bring up such a frivolous defense just to strike it down?

Where should I go next fall? / Faulkner - Jones School of Law
« on: March 17, 2008, 10:09:21 PM »
I received a full ride scholarship at this school, and I'm thinking about going here.  I plan to work in the public field as a prosecutor so the T4 ranking doesn't concern me much.  However, I am hesitant because it's only provisionally approved by the ABA.  If the law school loses its provisional approval before I graduate, does anybody know if I would be able to transfer my credits to another law school?  Also on a side note, does anybody know anything about the quality of education at this school?  I've heard some non-ABA approved law schools (which is what Faulkner was prior to 2006) provide a decent education while others are just plain old substandard.  Any help would be appreciated.

Recommendations / LSAC Recommendations For Scholarship Purposes
« on: February 06, 2008, 06:14:51 PM »
Is there any way for me to request LSAC to send letters of recommendation that I have on file for other purposes other than law school such as scholarship applications?  I have exhausted my LOR sources after applying to law school, and I have no idea who to turn to for scholarship LORs.  I'd hate to bother the same recommenders for more LORs.

Where should I go next fall? / Chicago Lawyers Alumni Network
« on: November 18, 2007, 07:52:40 PM »
Does anybody know which one of Chicago's law schools have the stronger alumni networks relative to one another?  I know Depaul is considered 'Chicago's law school' with the most alumni working in the Chicago area.  But I was wondering how does John Marshall, Loyola, and Chicago-Kent's alumni networks fare against each other?

Where should I go next fall? / Regional Law School Vs. Ranks???
« on: October 20, 2007, 10:20:55 PM »
At what point does the importance of the national rankings over take the importance of regional networking?

I have aspirations to practice at a small law firm setting in Chicago, and I'm trying to assess would it be wise to settle for a T4 law school close by based on its large network in the area or should I go to a T2 that is out of the region.  Obviously there are T2 schools in the Chicago area, but I'm trying to plan ahead in the event I do not get into any of the Chicago T2 schools. Any ideas would help. Thanks!

I once heard a law professor say that lawyers usually have friends who are lawyers because lawyers think differently than nonlawyers in that they analyze something from every possible angle.  They also conversate differently than nonlawyers in that they're very precise with the words that they use in conversation.  Ever since preparing for the LSAT, I find myself starting to think and conversate like a pre-law student in everyday situations.  In conversations, I'll split-hairs on topics and dissect people's word usage (Bill Clinton's "well that depends on what your definition of the word is is").  I make less and less assumptions that would be an acceptable assumption to a normal person.  For example, instead of telling my roommate to go wash the dishes, I tell him to go wash the dishes, glasses, and forks.  I mean, I know damn well he wouldn't wash just the dishes and leave the dirty forks and glasses in the sink if I told him to just wash the dishes, but I just like to be precise.  Do I need a shrink?   ;D
