I don't know anything about the Evelyn Wood's program. But, I took a speed reading class at my high school 4 years ago. It seemed to help RC, etc. but I'm sure it had something to do with having to read every day. The class was a semester long. We tested our speed/RC at the beginning of the class. Then did the "techniques" for the semester taking a quiz (reading passage w/ questions) each week.
You basically learn how to skim effectively.
My speed went from 275wpm to a little over 900wpm on the weekly quizzes.
What was interesting though, is that at the end of the semester the teacher had us take a quiz (reading passage) and we were supposed to read at our normal comfortable pace instead of the hurried-speedreading/skimming. I read the passage at what seemed to be amazingly slow, but read the passage around 400wpm.
The class probably couldn't hurt. But, it's probably better to just do a lot of the old RC sections of the preptests.
Hope that helps.
