Choosing the Right Law School / Re: Arkansas, St. Louis or Tennessee?

Well, I only wish I was getting 10 grand a year with in-state tuition.  That would be an easy decision.  I'm not so lucky...only 4 grand per year with no guarantees of ever getting in-state.

yea...anyone else?

Choosing the Right Law School / Arkansas, how are the job prospects?
« on: April 08, 2007, 09:32:56 PM »
At this point my favorite school is Arkansas, but I'm worried about the job prospects.  Does anybody have any information on this?  I've been admitted to better schools, but Arkansas has friends/family close by.  Can I get a good paying job (i consider 60,000 starting salary plenty good)?  The U.S. news doesn't have a starting salary statistic...

Yea, I visited a few weeks ago.  I really liked it.  The only real concern I have with it is the cost.  I'm out of state.  Their residency requirements are very unclear meaning if I were not to ever get residency, it would cost a lot more.

Paul, are you already attending UT?

Choosing the Right Law School / Arkansas, St. Louis or Tennessee?

I'm down to these three.  I have scholarships offered from each: Tennesee $4,000 per year, St. Louis $20,000 per year, and Arkansas $12,000 for the first year and $6,000 for the next two (b/c residency is pretty much guaranteed after the first year).  As it stands, the cost goes up with the rank.  I'd gladly live in each area.  Give me your opinions!

Also, how significant is an additional $45,000 in debt?  That is potentially the difference between Tennessee and Arkansas.

You'll probably get in, just don't expect any scholarships...

Wasn't sure how I'd do, felt like i blew it when I walked out, and ended up doing pretty good (didn't ace it or blow it).

SLU is ranked 80, Wake, 38, Kentucky and Tennessee are both around 60 and Arkansas is 3rd tier (though from what I understand they just moved down for some reason).

Here's my worry.  I'm not sure what area of law I want to practice yet.  If I go to wake and end up loving public sector type work, I'd never be able to pay back $100,000+ in loans.  However, the salary difference is pretty significant.

Right now I'd have to say Arkansas and St. Louis are the front runners for me, just because of the low debt.  Is the extra $20,000 worth it?

Haha, Alf.  Great offer, but I think I'll hold onto my soul.

Ok, I'm down to five schools.  I've visted all 5 of them, and there are things I like about each of them.  I could also see myself living in each of these areas.  I've calculated a rough estimate of the debt (after tution, scholarships and cost of living have been considered) I'd take in for each school.  Also, I really don't have aspirations to enter into a large firm that will require me to sell my soul.

The schools                  Debt

Arkansas                    $44,000.
St. Louis                   $51,000.
Kentucky                    $63,000.
Tennessee                   $84,000.
Wake Forest                 $110,000.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!!!
