Alabama / Living in Birmingham?
« on: April 27, 2007, 03:15:09 PM »
We're still waiting on final word from SO's employer, but there's a good chance that he'll end up in their Bham office or if he starts in Tuscaloosa, he might end up having to transfer to Bham during the 3 years that we're there.

Are there any suggestions for where to live if he's working in Bham and I'm at UA?  I'm willing to drive, but I'm hesitant to live in Bham.  I feel like we'll miss out on the social side of law school by living that far away.  Or, is there a decent contingent of law students in Bham that get together up there?

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / CURVES...

...is the name of a women's only fitness facility.

Every time I see a post regarding CURVES instead of curves, I can't help but think of the women's gym.

Carry on.

Non-Traditional Students / Is 34 too old?
« on: May 02, 2007, 08:26:03 PM »
Hey LSDers...this was posted on another board I frequent.  I'm hoping if I post it here and get some good responses, I can point the OP over here.  On the other board, a board full of newlyweds, they'll all telling her that 34 isn't the best age to be taking on student loans and at best are recommending she talk her husband into a PT program.  IMO, a 177 is worth taking on the debt and almost certain scholarships at a T14.

...aka...where are the cool kids going to law school?  For those of you trying to decide on a law school, maybe this list will help you stalk or avoid a particular LSD poster.  Maybe you're looking for roommates or someone to share a moving van.  Either way, here's a consolidated list of LSD'ers who are Accepted and Decided.

Congratulations everyone!

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Law School Survival Notes
« on: April 04, 2007, 04:17:07 PM »
http://www.lawschoolsurvivalnotes.com

Just saw this site and wanted to share.  It appears to be a Wiki style website of law school outlines.  No idea how useful they are, but it's something free that can entertain us 0L's.

EDIT: Potentially better site...

http://www.notemesh.com/

Facebook + law school outline + wiki

It looks awfully similar to Law School Survival notes in that it's a wiki interface for class notes.  The difference though is that you can sort it by school, course, and section.  This way, everyone who has that crazy professor who spends the entire semester on one topic can have an outline that has that highlighted, while everyone else can focus on their own prof eccentricities.  Of course the key to success it to get your section to use it...and probably to keep it quiet from the prof!

Reviews, Visits, and Rankings / University of Alabama
« on: March 31, 2007, 04:48:18 PM »
Posting a review from my visit this week:

I heard some people who said the law school is dark and dingy, and the old wing is pretty dark.  However the new one is bright, cheery, and modern.  There's a new cafeteria and coffee shop.  There's a book store that sells Law School shirts, commercial outlines, all of the law school books, and last minute highlighters.  There are even a few study rooms that you can sign out for study groups, complete with conference tables and dry erase boards.   With the new addition, they’ve moved all of the clinics to the law building, instead of various law firms around town.  They’ve essentially created their own law firm on campus.  Several people say they’re competitive, but due to the large amount of time a clinic takes, most people who want to work in a clinic get the chance.

Everyone is soooo nice there: the student ambassadors, the faculty, the admissions staff; you really do feel like you’re wanted.  One thing that really stuck out was that as the student ambassador was giving us our tour guide, 25 minutes into the tour we wandered back through a lounge, as she is saying that many students just lounge and study, she points out where she was studying and left her books and coffee to give us a tour.  The fact that she just left her stuff out in the open without concern of anything happening to it really spoke to the safety and security of the law school.

Pretty cool fact --- there are no law school courses from 12-1.  It's lunch time.   :D  Of course that means the cafeteria is pretty packed then, but it's a nice break.  Also they usually use that time for brown bag meetings with guest speakers or profs who hold special sessions.

Several people said that profs truly help the students out, even as far as holding optional mock mid-terms and grading them, so that students know if they're grasping the material and doing the exam the right way.

Whenever I asked a question about how competitive the school is (such as placing all scholarship recipients in one section), everyone either laughed or asked "are there schools that are really like that?".  Of course grades are important, but they aren't everything.  Top 5% gets onto Law Review, but top 50% is allowed to audition.  OCI's are grades and resume driven.  Everyone was giddy that next year there's a NYC law firm coming to OCI.  Also next year they're increasing the faculty by 50%.  Knowing that faculty:student ratio is part of the USNWR rankings, I suspect they'll go up next year as well.

Of course the building is wireless, including access to the law library.  Most students were taking notes on laptops.  The new classrooms have projectors, so the class I sat in on used PPT to help the lecture.  It wasn’t a boring “next slide” presentation, but it was helpful to have the outline of what was going to be discussed up on screen for most of the class.

I met with a realtor and we checked out a few places.  There are a few neighborhoods popping up in Brookwood, Cottondale, and Vance, in case you want to live between Bham and Tuscaloosa.  Several people at the law school said that they do get a few law students each year who live in Bham.  It's pretty rough as a 1L, but as a 2L and 3L if you can schedule your classes on either 3 or 4 days of the week, it's much easier.

The campus itself is beautifully filled with southern architecture.  If you like football, law students are eligible for student tickets to the games.  If you don’t want anything to do with the undergrads, don’t worry.  The law school is in a corner of the campus where you can essentially never see any undergrads from the minute you drive to campus until you leave.

Overall, I was just sooo happy that it was a pretty quiet town.  Even the drive from Bham airport at 5pm was pretty easy, just under an hour.

I'm all set to claim my seat in the UA Class of 2010  ;D -  just waiting on one final detail about my SO's job to line up first and then I'm sending in the deposit check and picking out a house!

I have no idea how legit or credible this site is, but they're offering loans up to $50K/year to law school students.  You do not have to be a US citizen, just a permanent resident to apply.  You will need a full-time employed cosigner.  Repayment is 6 months after graduation.

I have no idea how helpful this is, but hopefully it's a starting point for those of you who might not qualify for the FAFSA.

Studying for the LSAT / Having trouble concentrating while studying?
« on: February 22, 2007, 10:50:59 PM »
Concentration - Laser-like Focus - Mental Sharpness. These mental states are all too elusive for many people. Scientists have found that the brains of many people actually work less while performing a task that requires more attention and brain activity. The reason for this is often neurological in nature. If your mind has not yet learned to reliably produce the brainwave patterns that result in concentration and attention, you may find that it is a rare event for you to be in "study mode". You may find yourself easily distracted, as if you are unable to switch gears. The trick to test-taking, studying and accelerated learning is to train your brain to easily switch itself into the intensely focused, attentive state that comes so easily to the great minds of our time.

And you can do all that just by listening to this $19 CD that can enhance your brain waves!

http://www.transparentcorp.com/products/cds/brain_enhancement/index.php

I gotta say, at first I saw this page and wanted to laugh my butt off.  Just another gimmick that people are selling.  Then I started to think...well, hell, I can waste $19 just to see if it works...no!  Damn you infomercials and as-seen-on-tv!  I fall for you all the time!

But seriously, I think this will help with your RC.  So someone else buy it and report back after June.  Thanks.  :P  Hey, it's safer than encouraging people to go on Adderall...

News Discussion / Britney Shaves Head

http://x17online.com/celebrities/britney_spears/x17_xclusive_britneys_cry_for_help.php

Seriously this girl just gets crazier and crazier...

http://www.thekansascitychannel.com/entertainment/11042191/detail.html

LOS ANGELES -- It's a new look for Britney. Pop singer Britney Spears has shaved her head completely bald.

US Magazine reported that Spears went into a hair parlor to get her head shaved and that when the hair stylist refused to shave her head, Spears grabbed the clippers and shaved it herself.

A Los Angeles television station grabbed footage of her Friday night at a tattoo parlor in the San Fernando Valley. She was there to get a couple of tiny tattoos on her wrist, a pair of pink and red lips. Us Weekly magazine reported that she also got a black, white and pink cross tattooed on her lower hip.

A parlor employee said Spears showed up unannounced and stayed for about 90 minutes, while dozens of fans, photographers and gawkers gathered outside.

The employee told US Magazine that Spears was agitated when she arrived at the tattoo parlor and that when someone asked her why she shaved her head, Spears said, "I don't want anyone touching me. I'm tired of everybody touching me."

The woman said Spears "wasn't making sense at all" and that it seemed like she wasn't in a good place. She said Spears was "totally freaking out."

"She was a nightmare to deal with," the woman told the magazine. "She was screaming and flipping out from the pain and wiggling her body all around."

Police eventually arrived to control the crowd and help Spears' bodyguards guide her into a waiting SUV. And by that time, she had covered her head with the hood of a sweatshirt.

As for the new bald look, one fan who's not terribly thrilled said, "It looks terrible."

Earlier in the week, Spears checked into a rehabilitation facility and then quickly checked out, People Magazine reported. People reported that the pop diva checked herself into Eric Clapton's Crossroads Centre in Antigua but left after one day.

Meanwhile, an e-mail on Tuesday from Spears' former assistant said the pop star needs to get her act together because she is headed for "rock bottom."

Felicia Culotta worked for the 25-year-old pop star for nearly 10 years.

Culotta wrote an e-mail that was posted on the Web site ThatOtherBlog.com. It was addressed to "Ruben" who reportedly runs the Web site.

Since filing for divorce from Kevin Federline in November, Spears has drawn criticism for her drinking, partying and sloppy appearance.

In her e-mail, Culotta said that Spears' family and close friends are trying to help her. Culotta said she is now working as a corporate flight attendant and living in Mississippi.

Gina Orr, Spears' publicist at Jive Records, couldn't be reached at her office and didn't immediately respond to an e-mail from the Associated Press asking for comment.

Law School Applications / FYI: No mail on President's Day
« on: February 17, 2007, 05:38:57 PM »
Just your friendly reminder that Monday is President's Day and there will be no mail delivery.  Today was our last hope of getting a snail-mail decision between now and Tuesday.

You may now proceed to freak out regarding what could possibly be sitting in your mailbox on Tuesday afternoon as well as debating whether admissions office will be open on this holiday and updating status checkers.
