General Off-Topic Board / Re: The "Today ROCKS because..." Thread
« on: December 15, 2006, 04:04:49 PM »
for two reasons:

1. because after i write 6 more pages and take a final, I'll be done with this awful semester!

and

2. I got a call from Teach For America today saying they lost the application materials I submitted during my interview.  This would suck, except they're asking me to re-send everything- to New York (I'm in Illinois, where I interviewd two weeks ago)- so that I can have my placement by the notification deadline, January 8.  I don't need to re-send my letter of rec. unless i want to because it's "already been reviewed."
Which could, possibly, hopefully mean that I've already been accepted and now they're just assigning me.  And that would absolutely, positively, completely ROCK!

A Resume Child Board would be best served with nutella and bananas, no contest.

a resume child board would have been very helpful.  I support its creation.

Lesbians are joyless and don't get to make fine jokes like these.

Are you sure?  I thought all the joyless women were just feminists, not necessarily sapphic-ists.

Good point:  feminists are joyless; lesbians are sexless.

well then I might as well just kill myself right now.

Bridget, we don't know each other, but I am both, so please be assured that this was a feeble stab at humor.  (My feminism obviously hindered me in this regard, you see.)

as was my response.  clearly, another failure of feminism.

Only for a few years, then I came back 'round.

I was waiting for something like that.

Yeah thanks.  We're here all week.  Don't forget to tip your server!

yes, that's the real reason for no 4.0... too busy controlling curls!

having a life was more important.  I could have lived in the library, but i would have no amazing significant other,  no resumé, fewer great memories, and very few friends if I had a 4.0.
probably would have saved on rent though...

General Off-Topic Board / Re: My friend was just raped
« on: December 14, 2006, 11:22:29 AM »
all that aside, the most important thing you can do for her is let her decide what to do.  trust me on this.  She just lost all power and control and the sooner she can feel like she's getting it back, the better.  Wanting to prosecute so it doesn't happen to anyone else is a common reaction, as is saying "we must go to the hospital NOW, don't question it."  but telling her she HAS to do anything will only exacerbate things.

Also, a rape kit is a VERY invasive procedure.  Some people compare it to being raped all over again.  For some it provides more of a sense of control, liek they're taking positive steps.  Again, it's all up to her.

i don't know where you live, but many areas have rape crisis centers and aside from local hotlines, there is a national one 1-800-656-4673.
