Law School Admissions / academic probation addendum
« on: November 29, 2008, 08:30:17 PM »
Here's the situation:
I am doing Teach For America right now and applying to law schools for next fall, when my two year commitment is complete.  Part of the Teach For America program was a certification program through a local diploma mill university.  It did not result in a degree, just facilitated my certification to teach.  I took three terms worth of classes, 2-3 per term while working full time (which as a first year teacher meant 80+ hours/week).  The first semester of teaching was the worst 4 months of my life and I frequently prioritized my students' needs (and my needs for things like sleep and food) above my grad school work.  I had a 2.83 GPA (an A-, a B-, and a C-) and was put on academic probation for second semester, as they do to any grad student with a GPA below 3.0.  I pulled straight A's after that and have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 (still .4 below my undergrad, but respectable).  I wasn't going to write an addendum because it seems extraneous to write one for a program that didn't grant a  degree, is not related to law, and was an obligation to enroll in as part of TFA.  But, on applications, most ask for an explanation of any probation by any institution.
So, include an addendum, or not?  thoughts?

I know it's late in the game.  But, I'd like to get some feedback and I'd be happy to read anything of yours that needs reading.

Law School Admissions / fee waivers two years after taking LSAT
« on: September 28, 2008, 03:57:43 PM »
I took the LSAT October of 2006, got all the mailings and waivers, applied, and then decided to do Teach for America for two years.  So I'm reapplying this year and wondering how to go about finding the fee waiver offers I got the first time around.  I got a few e-mails last year (fall 2007) but have only had one this year.  Is it a lost cause?  Is there something I need to update to bump my name up in LSAC?

In the vein of recent queer news, this is related.

The follow up:  I read somewhere that he was offered time on a radio show in exchange for not protesting and he took it, but I can't find confirmation of that.

hmmmm, not sure if i approve of the nerdification of women...

What's this about?

Where the Gays/Allies are going:

The George Washington University Gay Colonials:

The Colonials?! ew...  haha, guess I should have done my mascot research before deferring.  oh well, must not be that important to them if it's not all over their materials.

Another non-mich person representing...

I decided to defer at GWU for Teach for America... Too bad my scholarship doesn't get deferred right along with it.

Topher, is the bf in Philly for teach for america?  I'll be in Chicago for my two years, but if he is in Philadelphia we'd be at the same institute.

Choosing the Right Law School / Re: Any thoughts on UCLA?

Italian language & lit.  Ironically enough I pulled mediocre 3.3s and 3.4s in the first couple years of language classes then when I filtered into the 400 lit series with the grad students (they were kind enough to give us slightly shorter essays than the grads) I did pretty well.

ditto to that, only I had to go and do a major.  silly languages...

back to the point, any more info on UCLA?  I just got my acceptance there this week and keep finding out more and more things I like about it.  It might be good to hear more negatives though to get a better picture.
