If we want to know whether an object like a strand of DNA was designed then we need only look at an object we know to be designed like a computer and if the first has all the pertinent qualities of the second then we may infer that the first was designed.

evolution is always a good one.

You think religion and science are at odds over evolution? What do you mean by evolution anyway?

Before we proceed let me warn you that this talk may go further than you're willing to go. I don't want to waste your time or frustrate you needlessly. If you'd like to stop now, just let me know and I'll back off.

Let's focus on one claim at a time.

there is no reason to believe that what we understand as design is really design

Am I justified in thinking computers are designed? Or how about the sentence you now read. Did I not design it? Did I not arrange the letters in a specific order to achieve the purpose of conveying my meaning? Is this not design?

Which discipline is most trustworthy depends upon the claim in dispute. Do you have an example of a point at issue between science and religion?

Science and religion each provide knowledge, justified true belief. Are you asking which of the disciplines we should trust if/when they conflict?

116
No. Not really. Should there be?

Wait, you want to discuss Hume's design theory. Right?

Hume was critical of arguments from design to God. We started to talk about this before they locked the devil thread. We can still talk about it if you like.

117
That's what he said on the matter. Is there a question or argument in there somewhere?

118
No need to unlock the devil thread. Just open a separate thread on Hume. He's worth talking about. Should be fun.

I seek to hold as many reasonable beliefs as I may which will undoubtedly come off as "pompous" to those who prefer lunch to reason.
