Law School Admissions / Re: Another resume question
« on: August 10, 2006, 01:40:50 PM »
The food bank is the only thing that I really physically do.  I routinely donate gift baskets, gift cards and money from the business to the local sports teams, firefighters, Boy & Girl Scouts, animal shelters and just about every individual with cancer/transplants/medical issues who asks.  I just feel funny saying "here's a list of everyone I gave donations to:"  Anyone can give away money-its not like I'm really doing anything.

I have done fundraising for the food bank, but it is through my business, so would that count?  (Every holiday season we run a Tans for Cans promotion and give people a free tanning session for every 3 items they donate.)

There is a 5K in my town this weekend, perhaps I should sign up!

Law School Admissions / Another resume question
« on: August 10, 2006, 01:13:53 PM »
I have absolutely nothing to put in the activities/interests part of the resume.  Between being self-employed and a full-time student & married with a home to take care of there is no time for anything else.  My hobbies are pretty mundane-reading, working out, etc.  If I just have education and experience and completely omit this other type of section will it look bad?

Thanks.  Once I get it going I may take you up on that. :)

I'm considering writing about how I started my own business 6 years ago because I can't think of any other major accomplishments.  My problem is twofold-First, how to make it exciting to read? Second, how to explain why I want to go to law school instead of continuing full time in what I do now?  I feel like I will have to address this because of the amount of time in business and law is a career change in the opposite direction.

Is this a poor topic choice?

Law School Admissions / Resume questions

How far back do you go on the resume?  I have been out of highschool for 11 years, but held the job I started then for 4 years.  Also, during this time I held two or three jobs at a time.  Do they all get included?

I started my own business 6 years ago and I had an 8 month gap between leaving my previous position and opening my store.  Should I include the part-time retail job I worked while getting the business ready to open?

Also, do you think it will look strange that I have been self-employed for so long and I want to go to law school?

Law School Admissions / Which GPA to put on apps?

Should I put my GPA from my degree granting school or my recalculated LSAC GPA when the applications ask for GPA?

Law School Admissions / Disclosing juvenile offenses

On the application when it asks about criminal offenses even if they are expunged, does that include ones when you were a juvenile?

When I was 16 I was bullied by a much bigger girl at school & ended up breaking her nose.  Her parents pressed charges & I had to pay restitution & was on probation.  Do I have to list this?

I am a non-trad & only had a few semesters left to finish my UG.  I have had most of my professors for only 1 class so I don't know them very well & the one who would be great is on a sabbatical in South America.  I have owned and operated my own business for the past 6 years so my work references are pretty limited too.  Here are my choices-what do you think?

1 History prof-just had this summer so still fresh in his mind.
2 Academic advisor-probably knows my capabilities based on my grades better than anyone else and would write a fabulous letter.
3 Small business manager at my bank who is also my client-knows me well, has watched me grow my business over the years & is closest thing to professional rec I can get since I'm my own boss.
4 Attorney who is an alumni & very accomplished (has worked w/ UN & other major international organizations).  (Unfortunately he is also my uncle, but different last name so maybe not so obvious)
