Choosing the Right Law School / Pitt vs. Duquesne
« on: March 30, 2007, 07:23:12 AM »
Need to make a descision today & I'm still on the fence.  I'm leaning towards Pitt since it is ranked higher, but I am not getting any $$ there.  Duquesne offered $10K per year & the lower debt load is tempting.

Any advice?

Choosing the Right Law School / 3.44/159 Chances?
« on: October 25, 2006, 02:30:35 PM »
Pitt is my first choice & both LSAT & GPA are at the median.  Should I apply now to get the app in early or retake in Dec.?  What are my chances?

I think I could do better in Dec., but won't have a lot of time to prepare with finals coming up so I don't know it a retake is worth it.

Please advise.

Law School Admissions / Apply now or retake LSAT?
« on: October 21, 2006, 11:15:20 AM »
I need help deciding whether to apply now and get my app in early or retake the Dec. LSAT.  My Sept. LSAT was 159 and my GPA is 3.44 which are both in the average range for my first choice school.  Here is the issue, if you are accepted and have at least a 161 on the LSAT and a 3.4 or better you are guaranteed $10,000 towards tuition which is a big deal to me.

I am torn on whether to get the advantage of applying early, then retaking the Dec. test and hoping I qualify for the $$ or just waiting until after the Dec. test to apply when I am pretty sure I will have a better score.

Also, I don't want to seem whiny, but I know the reason that I did poorly is because  Thursday night before the test my car got rear-ended pretty bad, I got hurt and I wasn't feeling anywhere near 100%.  Is there any way to address this in an addendum or should I just suck it up and not mention it?

Studying for the LSAT / Please read if taking the LSAT at Pitt tomorrow

Check to see if you got an e-mail from LSAC.  There was a change of address for the test center & you will need to print out a new ticket or bring your original ticket with a copy of the e-mail.  It was supposed to say 3942 Forbes Ave NOT Fifth Ave.

Law School Admissions / Another resume question
« on: August 10, 2006, 02:13:53 PM »
I have absolutely nothing to put in the activities/interests part of the resume.  Between being self-employed and a full-time student & married with a home to take care of there is no time for anything else.  My hobbies are pretty mundane-reading, working out, etc.  If I just have education and experience and completely omit this other type of section will it look bad?

I'm considering writing about how I started my own business 6 years ago because I can't think of any other major accomplishments.  My problem is twofold-First, how to make it exciting to read? Second, how to explain why I want to go to law school instead of continuing full time in what I do now?  I feel like I will have to address this because of the amount of time in business and law is a career change in the opposite direction.

Is this a poor topic choice?

Law School Admissions / Resume questions
« on: August 08, 2006, 12:30:10 PM »
How far back do you go on the resume?  I have been out of highschool for 11 years, but held the job I started then for 4 years.  Also, during this time I held two or three jobs at a time.  Do they all get included?

I started my own business 6 years ago and I had an 8 month gap between leaving my previous position and opening my store.  Should I include the part-time retail job I worked while getting the business ready to open?

Also, do you think it will look strange that I have been self-employed for so long and I want to go to law school?

Law School Admissions / Which GPA to put on apps?

Should I put my GPA from my degree granting school or my recalculated LSAC GPA when the applications ask for GPA?

Law School Admissions / Disclosing juvenile offenses
« on: July 22, 2006, 08:18:54 AM »
On the application when it asks about criminal offenses even if they are expunged, does that include ones when you were a juvenile?

When I was 16 I was bullied by a much bigger girl at school & ended up breaking her nose.  Her parents pressed charges & I had to pay restitution & was on probation.  Do I have to list this?
