How did the 1L SA gig go?
(I seem to recall you saying you got one)

Did you just mass mail, or did you have some connections?

Mass mailed, but I had some opportunities via connections (I just liked the firm I picked, which I had no connection to, better). Anyways, 1L SA was awesome - I'd be a summer associate the rest of my life if I could be. I look forward to doing it again (though I am going elsewhere this summer).

Haven't been on here in a long time. Any questions? I'm a Penn 2L who used to post on here a lot.

i'm heading down to philly tomorrow night to look at my apt and check the city out some more.  anyone else going to be there in the Wednesday-Friday night window?

i can hang wed 5 or thurs after about 1:30.  fri night i think i'll be in nyc.

EDIT: feel better towelie! i think we both know why you're sick...  :-*

LOL! I'd say that's not why I am sick, given that I haven't really gotten sick all year. There was something going around at my firm and I caught it. I tried to bill out some hours from home, but ended up just sleeping all day. I hope I'm not too far behind my work, now...

I'll be here/in Wilmington, but I'm home sick right now.. so there's a chance I won't be able to go out :(

Where should I go next fall? / Re: Retake a 169 for UPenn?

Well, June is a bit of an exaggeration of course, if you haven't heard anything past April you're very likely on a wait list. But I can't see why you'd commit to a lesser school before April if you believe you have a chance at Penn, which I'd say you certainly do. Only reason I could see to that is big $$$ from some decent school.

if i don't get into Penn i'm gonna go to temple or villanova b/c i wanna stay in the area...so i guess it's fine to b on the waitlist and not commit to one of those schools since its not like i have to worry about moving to another place or anything by a certain date and needing to make a decision

wow that would be a huge mistake
like I said, there are a bunch of schools that you can go to or three years and end up back in Philly.  You are pretty much autoadmit at Duke, and philly firms would be knocking down your door.

any school outside of philly is impractical for me at this point in my life due to personal circumstances

You will never know until you apply. Focus on your personal statement and other essays and hope for the best.

Exactly. That's why I don't get it when people say NYC hands-down is the best place to live in the world. That's not true for everyone whose net worth is less than $100m.

Fixed.

That's pretty accurate. If I were a multi, multi-millionare, I wouldn't mind living in NYC.

you probably shouldn't be basing your law school choices on social scenes (in which case you cannot beat NYC).

To some, NYC has the best social scene but to others it is the polar opposite...

Couldn't you say that about any place on the planet?  "Some think it's great, others don't."

So someone recommended that I read "Should I really be a lawyer" by deborah schneider... I don't feel like spending the money and waiting for the book when the exact same thing can be done here. In short, I'm going gaga over the 6-figure debt at my options amongst lower 2nd tier schools. So, here are my reasons for going to law school, in no particular order

1. I can't find a decent job now. For some stupid reason I chose an english lit undergrad degree, which is only good for getting into grad school
2. english lit grad school I think I would find it irritating. especially the lackluster job prospects. I also don't want to spend more time in undergrad to pursue another academic direction
3. I think that law would be intellectually stimulating and interesting. I've sat in on a class at IUB and I thought that the stuff was interesting. the classes themselves look interesting.
4. my parents do want me to go to law school, and all of my friends are in grad programs.
5. I'm very analytical, and I think I would benefit from the structure that law school provides. And, looking at the other jobs out there... I can see myself being very bored with just about everything.
6. I've met lawyers who were public defenders... not so appealing. I've also met JD's who were advertising executives. Interesting.

basically, my doubts come down to two things:

1. the f-ing debt. 6 figures is alot. Way too much. If it were 50-80k, I'd have a much easier time stomaching it. For the past few weeks since getting the financial aid report, I've been worried sick about the debt.

2. the work after law school. I keep on hearing nightmare stories from biglaw firms. I also don't want to end up doing petty stuff like divorce/tax/public defender. I'm just worried that I'll incur all this debt and be unable to pay it back.

in the end... everyone has doubts I'm certain. anyone have anything to add?

Though I have no desire to practice it, I just wanted to say that tax law is by no means "petty."
