Maybe I missed it somewhere, but do you know where you want to practice?  What type of job you want?

Ideally?  I'd like to clerk right after school, then work at a big firm for 3-4 years, then ultimately do something goverment/public interest related.  I prefer DC, NYC, SF, maybe Chicago.

Well then.  Vandy actually places surprisingly well for Clerkships, but mainly in the south.

For any of those cities you mentioned, Cornell wins the placement game, as well as the placement game for non-southern clerkships.  Keep in mind also that some public interest jobs (the sought after ones) and many government jobs are highly competitive and school name can go far in that game.

I would go to Cornell.  The economy is sh!t now and will probably not get any better.

Yeah, but I think the economic downturn will affect the class of 2010 much more than it affects the class of 2011

I don't know if that's true.  We had a career services meeting last week, and the Dean told us he was ahead of last year in terms of firms signed up for our main job event.  He expects no noticeable difference, and predicts we do just as well as the class of 2009 (who had a near record year)

If you're sort of citified (as in, you like civilization) Cornell will be hell.

This is just false - I'm quite "citified" and I don't mind Ithaca at all.  Granted, I wouldn't want to spend 12 months a year out here, but virtually nobody does.  That being said, I like the college campus atmosphere, and this is the last time I will be able to immerse myself in the academic lifestyle.

If the partner was aware that the incoming students at both schools are academically on par, or if they had the time to assess all the other information you've compiled over the last couple of months, I'm not sure they'd be telling you so authoritatively to head to Ithaca. Despite all the misinformation available on these boards, you prospectives have had a lot more time to become experts on law schools and a lot more at stake than a partner deciding how many people to hire from different schools in a given year.

Except that the hiring partners are the ones that are doing the hiring.  While his opinion shouldn't control, it doesn't matter whether his view on Cornell vs. Vandy is misinformed, because in the end it is the one that counts.  Besides, it's not.  Vandy is a great school I'm sure, but Cornell is a better school, on the whole.

I won't marginalize your dilemma but people go through this debate every cycle, and more people have been opting for Vanderbilt every year
Not quite sure how this is really relevant.  If more people decided to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge, would you advise that we all follow suit?  Clearly it must be a good idea.

I met a prospective from Syracuse at yesterday's ASD and he wasn't even considering Cornell for law school because of the location... there seems to be a trend of people in upstate NY wanting out of upstate NY.
That might hold true for someone that's lived there already/for a good amount of time, but it's not necessarily representative of the feelings of people who haven't been there so long that they are sick of it.  I imagine in 2 years I will be ready to leave Ithaca, but there is such thing as enjoying living in a place for a limited time.

The whole location/weather thing really is quite overblown, often times by people who have never even been here, or have flown in for 1 (maybe 2) days for an ASD.  Call me crazy, but I don't think a one day visit by someone who has never been a 1L or experienced that lifestyle qualifies one as an expert on whether the location or weather suck.  (And the forecast is 60s-70s this week  ;))

That's a good question. I think I'd seek any summer associate job I could get, with a fall back of local work. I don't really know how the summer jobs work, though. I figure I'll learn this in a few months once I get there!

Chances at 1L summer associate at Cornell >>> Chances at a 1L summer associate at Vandy

I don't do it so much that I'm a gunner and everyone rolls their eyes when I raise my hand (at least I don't think so).

If the last time you raised your hand was recently enough that people will remember, you're probably a gunner  ;)
