Choosing the Right Law School / Re: Pets? Pros vs Cons during law school
« on: January 28, 2008, 12:14:39 PM »
I'll definitely be having my dog with me in law school.  She's seven years old and I've had her since she was a puppy.  I'll most likely be living in an apartment - but she's a small dog, half jack russell terrier half cocker spaniel, so I think the space will be fine.

She's used to being home alone during the day while I'm working, so no huge adjustment there.   I am a little worried about summers - namely, trying for an SA position in a large market that might not be as animal-friendly.

[Wish I had a picture of my dog to upload, but I'm at work right now.]  :(

I want a Blue Moon... what law school would that be?

Got it.

Blue moon would be Vanderbilt.

Why? Vanderbilt has a good law school but still tries to dupe people into believing it is the Harvard of the South. Blue moon, a Coors product, is decent but its label claimed it was a  Belgian white. A group of  Belgian breweries sued Coors and it was settled out of court. Now the label claims that it is in the style of a  Belgian white.

If you want to take this further, Duke would be Hoegaarden -- the very popular Belgian white. Duke is the real Harvard of the South.

If Vanderbilt adcoms read this, please follow Coors' lead and change your marketing material to say "In the style of the Harvard of the South."

LOL...true AND hilarious!

Law School Admissions / Re: Michigan with Significant Other?

I PM'd you about this, but I will offer the same advice for anyone else in the same situation.  Oakland County is one of the wealthiest counties in the country, and would almost certainly be a good place to be a financial planner.  The nearest Oakland communities are about 20-25 minutes from Ann Arbor, and the nicest area is about 40-45 minutes away.  In order of closest to furthest from Ann Arbor, Plymouth, Northville, Novi, Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield, Birmingham, and Bloomfield Hills are very affluent communities (especially the last three).

My SO is in real estate - not exactly the best market ANYWHERE, especially across Michigan.  But, high-end properties in the communities Ender listed definitely ARE selling - seemingly unaffected by the economic downturn of the rest of the state.  I'd agree that financial planning would do well in those areas.  Anecdotally, Michigan has a huge disparity between the "well-off" and the "not-so-well-off".  Lots of people with two homes - Michigan and Florida, so you're SO could do very well in and around A2.

Thanks for starting this thread...

Did you write the "Why Michigan" essay and, if so, what aspects did you focus on?

Do you have any info to share in regard to the Darrow?

What about the JD/MBA program with the Ross School of Business?

Any insight you can share would be most appreciated.

Thanks!  :)

I graduated last May and have been working for a year now, but I just thought I'd add that my productivity at work has tanked ridiculously in the last month while I've focused on my apps.  People are wondering what's happened to me, haha.

Oh well, I suppose it doesn't help that I don't give a rat's ass about my job.

Exactly the same situation here. Word for word ;)

Thanks for your perspectives on Michigan - it's definitely one of my TOP choices.  :)
