Financial Aid / Re: Am I supposed to do anything else?
« on: May 01, 2007, 03:54:37 PM »
a few weeks after i was accepted, i received a letter from the financial aid office indicating what amounts i was awarded for subsidized and unsubsidized stafford loans.  then, i was directed to the school's website and was told how to proceed.  i was told i may apply for the federalplus loans, if necessary, beginning june 1.

depending on when you completed the fafsa and when you were accepted, i would contact the financial aid office at which ever school you decide to attend.

that's the best i got.

Where should I go next fall? / Re: FIU vs Miami

Well, I am soliciting your "opinions"  ;)

I had myself "chalked up" as well. What has happened is that some of the posts on this site about being stupid to pay for private tuition have gotten to me. I think I also feel like I'm being selfish: my mom wants to loan me some of the money and my bf says he'll send me a few hundred a month but I feel bad. I mean why should they do that? Just 'cause I want to go to an expensive school?

regarding my opinion, it was just a litle caveat.

i don't think it is selfish to accept help from people...especially your mom and boyfriend.  they offered.  i have been known to feel guilty about accepting gifts in a self-deprecating way.  i am sure the are both happy to help out their daughter and girlfriend, respectively.  i think it would be a source of pride for them to be able to help you out.  i never even asked, but my mom has apologized for not being able to help me out.  if the situation was reveresed, would you be willing to help them out?

reeses, i already had you chalked up as going to miami.

i chose miami over a much cheaper in-state school because i believe miami will provide greater opportunities in the long run which justifies the larger financial investment.  the debt is certainly daunting. however, it's something that thousands of people have done, so i know it is possible.

-you don't feel like you can get exicted about fiu (winner: miami)
-miami tax law program (winner: miami)
-sec actively recruits at miami (winner: miami)
-fiu not having anything you are interested in, clinics and/or electives (winner: miami)

as far as a legal degree being a legal degree, that is up for debate...hence the existence of a large portion of the posts on this site.  for good or bad, the legal field seems to be largely driven on prestige or perception of prestige, or maybe i am just caught up in it.  i am only providing my opinions and thought process.

mason, i have been looking at 1 bedroom apartments.  i figure the first year i should have my own space and look to go the roommate route in the future.  i'm going to assess my financial situation to be sure.

i will definitely share as much info as possible. keep us posted on what you find out.  i think you should walk the streets about 1:00 am to get a real feel for the area.

I think you may have a better chance at seeing what the place is like at 3 in the morning. 1 seems a little too early for Miami

damn....maybe i am getting old.

Where should I go next fall? / Re: Death Battle!! UF vs. UM
« on: April 26, 2007, 02:29:46 PM »
i'm going to attend UM this fall. i went down to visit in march. i didn't have time to see downtown miami, just the coconut grove and coral gables area. people just looked....normal. i was really worried about perfect skinny/fit gorgeous people breezing around in ferraris, but i really didn't see it. there were really good-looking people--and there were really not, and some were driving porshes, but most weren't. so, maybe i went on the four days all the plastics cleared out, or maybe they're only downtown, or maybe that whole stereotype has been completely blown out of proportion. i really don't know. all i can say is that at least the UM area didn't scare me.

i'm not worried about going to UM for three years. i plan on working hard so that, if i really don't end up liking miami, i can clear out. the resources are definitely there to leave as long as you distinguish yourself and be proactive. meanwhile, it's a beautiful campus and a beautiful area to de-stress in when not working on school stuff. i've read so many of these UM vs. UF threads to get the sense that you're going to get a good education either place you go. with that out of the picture, it's hard FOR ME to imagine someone desiring a college town like gainesville over what any big city can offer except where tuition is concerned. especially because it's near the water! but that's the key issue: for the kind of people who NEED a lot going on (ME), who look for festivals and museums and trendy nightlife and beaches and fifty types of ethnic cuisine to choose from, miami (or big city in general) is it. meanwhile, everytime someone talks about entertainment in UF being big, they mention keggers or $4 dollar beers. that's not a bad thing, but it's a very different type of scene for a very different type of person, ie i would think someone more down-to-earth, has that favorite bar, likes to go the more casual route, doesn't feel jilted that there's only one indian place to eat in town, or whatever.

you guys are arguing like there is one answer to this question. either UM and miami is better or UF and gainesville is. but  neither school has won the argument of more prestige or better education yet (the US news ratings matter to those people who care about the name, and honestly, those people better get into the top 40), so it comes down to which area suits your personality. UM suits mine, maybe UF suits yours. i don't think there's a need to put down one or the other. it would probably be more helpful to list the kind of activities or opportunities each school offers so that people considering either one could figure out which school fit them.

.....and i'll probably get five people telling me how i'm wrong and a complete idiot, but for what it's worth, that's what i think.

wow....nice.  i don't believe it could have been expressed any better.  it's an individual choice and each person is different--motivation and interests vary.

Anyone on here NOT living in the UV housing? Im headed down to Miami tomorrow (err today I suppose) and will be looking at housing, Anyone else in the same boat, or did everyone luck out and get the UV housing that I didn't apply for?

mason, i'm in the same boat--no university housing.  i've been looking like crazy online and trying to find a balance between proximity and price.
