Acceptances / Re: American U, 24 hour notice, yikes
« on: April 26, 2006, 06:28:29 PM »
I got the offer and withdrew. I'm in at GMU anyway and AU wasn't going to throw me any merit $$ so it was a no brainer. Had they offered me conventional admission they would have had a much better chance of snagging me.

Me too. I had been considering American along with GMU and Maryland. I was so turned off by the 24-hour ploy that I withdrew within an hour.

oops...

I meant "I would say it's unethical, BUT ... if law schools."

I saw that, but your post was still clear.

Why is that unethical? Someone will get that seat either way! It could make someone's day later on. I got accepted based on merit. I shouldn't have to feel bad about waiting extra time to decide. Plus one of those schools gets free money

It forces more people to have to make more first deposits and wait later to make life choices. Some people cannot afford to engage in that game.

PS.  I completely agree with the below statement.

Overall, I was impressed and would urge people to seriously consider Cornell over other T14s.

I agree as well. I was very impressed by the whole experience.

Some people do it, but it is unethical.

I think it is a huge boost. You are a hero and if some adcom at UC-B projects their political anger onto you, then that is not place you would want to be anyway.
