General Off-Topic Board / The "help Melanie pick out a new TV" thread

I have a lovely TV at the moment that I got for free. My granddad passed away shortly before I was moving into my new place after graduation, and I was able to take his TV and VCR instead of buying new ones for myself, which was great.
However, two years later, this TV is slowly dying. The screen has a nasty habit of scrunching up to be SUPER widescreen, so while I am still able to hear, only about 1/4 of the screen is actually visible for watching.
For now, this problem is temporarily solved for about 30 seconds to 5 minutes by hitting the sides or top of the TV, but it's been like this for almost 2 months and my lazy/cheap solution doesn't seem to be working as well anymore.
So now I need to buy a new TV. I'm looking for something in the 26-30" inch range because my current set is 27" and I can't go much bigger than that. I've looked at some stuff online but I really hate dealing with a lot of electronics research, so I'm opening it up to any electronics-lovers of the OTB to make some suggestions. Discuss!
