General Off-Topic Board / Law School Here I Come!
« on: March 11, 2005, 11:19:29 PM »
It's Friday, 1:15AM, I have been here since 9AM, and I am NOW leaving the law firm to go home and come back again tomorrow at 9AM (yes it is a Saturday). Even the first year associates are out for the night. Suddenly law school seems like a breeze...I am already putting the traditional first year associate hours. ;)

Well I'm done....just rambling  ;D

Just wanted to start a thread for this scholarship. I know I don't have a decent chance, I would like to know when they start sending out invitations to interview. I believe the interviews begin March 12-13 (I think that is what ElizaB found out). I figure that they should be letting students know pretty soon if they are to interview. If you do get an invite, can you please state your stats for us with inquiring minds? Thanks!

Law School Admissions / Confusing Application Results
« on: February 27, 2005, 12:04:59 PM »
Really confused with my application results this cycle...maybe it is because of my split LSAT, but it makes me glad that I didn't listen to conventional wisdom for applying and went for the schools I want to attend (even if it seems that I would be an auto reject). My stats are 150/158=154 and a 3.76. So far here are my results:

Georgetown PT - Reject
George Washington PT - Reject
George Mason - Reject
Illinois - Reject
Texas - Deferred, Reject
Minnesota - Deferred, Pending
SMU - Accepted
Baylor (summer) - Accepted
Houston - WL
Pepperdine - WL
Lewis and Clark - Pending
Vandy - Pending
Washington and Lee - Pending
Oregon - withdrew
Willamette - withdrew

I figured that I would have been accepted to Houston before getting accepted at SMU or Baylor. Even though Pepperdine is considered a reach for me, I figured that I would have a better shot at it than at the schools I was admitted to. I seriously doubt I will get into anymore schools, but I am glad I applied "just in case." If I re-did my applications, I would probably send more applications to the schools around the 40-50 range rank per USNews, but I would have picked Baylor and SMU over the other schools I would have applied to so no worries. I guess the point I am trying to make is to apply to a wider range...sometimes you will be really surprised. I know I risked not getting accepted again, but I am glad it worked out for me.  ;D

Wasn't sure if a thread was already started for Pepper waitlists. Just wanted to let y'all know they are coming....

Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / From Texas Deferral to Rejection
« on: February 24, 2005, 09:05:09 PM »
Well I am glad I finally got the letter. Disappointed with the result, but I knew it was a longshot. Got the letter today, dated Feb. 22nd. Oh well, I am still happy I am going to law school....even if it's not at Texas.  ;D

Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / GMU is starting to Ding
« on: February 16, 2005, 08:22:00 PM »
It is official, I will be moving from DC (and I am not upset about that prospect  ;D). I guess my waitlist at GMU last year really was a fluke. Oh well. I was still very impressed with the school none the less...nice and helpful admission committee, really respectful students, and the school aint too shabby either ;). Texas here I come!  ;D

General Off-Topic Board / Talk about intimidation...
« on: February 14, 2005, 03:53:45 PM »
I work for a BIGLAW firm in DC in an administrative position and have recently become the "head person" in my department even though this is my first job and have only worked there for 4 months. Any how, some major business directly involves my department and I had to do a conference call with all the senior partners including the hiring partner. Needless to say, I felt a bit intimidated, especially since I would like to work here as an attorney but the firm is a rankings whore and does not recruit from the law school I will probably be attending.  :-\

I answered all their questions and what not, but it this meeting goes beyond what most law students have to go through and I am not even in law school yet (not trying to pat myself on the back, just trying to describe the stress level). What made it even more stressful was the fact that I had to transcribe all that was said and email it to the partners as well as a few others who couldn't make the meeting (transcribing is not what I do, but thinking about missing something or writing incorrect info is also bothering me). I still have my job, so I don't think I screwed anything up yet, but I was going bonkers. One of the partners told me a lawyer joke right before the meeting (A guy walks into a bar and says "You know, all lawyers are a**holes!" A guy at the bar turns around and says "I resent that because I AM an a**hole.") Cheesy yes, but at least these guys weren't pompous. Ugh, I was scared crapless when they started talking about statutes, court opinions, and legalities...I was afraid that they were going to ask me about something along those lines (note, I am not a paralegal and took no classes for laws...everyone else in my department are certified, why I am the new head I don't know  ???

Incoming 1Ls / Student Loan Payments
« on: February 14, 2005, 03:39:13 PM »
Maybe this is a stupid question, and I am probably being lazy and not looking this up for myself, but do you have to start paying off your loan WHILE you are in law school? Are there payments you have to make while you are in school or do you start paying these loans off when you graduate? I know that the stafford loans require payment after you graduate but I wasn't sure about the private loans you get. I have heard horror stories about people not getting things paid while in law school and I wasn't sure if it was because of payment of student loans. Anyone know?

Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / I want my bloody rejections!
« on: February 08, 2005, 08:49:26 PM »
I wish I can get the rest of my rejections (aka decisions) for my pending applications. I keep having dreams about getting into Texas and I want to have closure already! I guess they don't call it a dream school for nothin LOL

Sorry this thread is actually pointless :D
