We all know how in the recent 2008 USNEWS Pepperdine and U of San Diego practically switch spots with USD dropping 20 spots to the 85 position and Pepperdine rising almost 20 spots.

People have analyzed the situation and have attributed the USD drop to the drop in their 9 month employment stat to 86% while Pepperdines rose to 97%.

If you compare the following data sheets from LSAC, which should contain the same data from USNEWS, you will find a contradiction.

Pepperdine:
http://officialguide.lsac.org//SearchResults/SchoolPage_PDFs/ABA_LawSchoolData/ABA4326.pdf

San Diego:
http://officialguide.lsac.org//SearchResults/SchoolPage_PDFs/ABA_LawSchoolData/ABA4849.pdf

If you notice, Pepperdine has only 81% of it's graduates listed as having jobs after 9 months, yet in USNEWS it is listed as 97%

Also notice USD lists 83% of it's graduates having jobs at 9 months, while USNEWS lists it at 86%.

LSAC data/USNEWS data
Pepperdine: 81%/97%
USD: 83%/86%

Another thing that it fishy about these two schools switching rank is the fact that USD reported % of students employed at graduation but Pepperdine has a big N/A for this catagory according to USNEWS.

Now, compare the other data from these two schools.

USD seems to have higher numbers in most of the other catagories.

Given these inconsistencies, I smell shenanigans on many levels.

Where should I go next fall? / WORK STUDY PROGRAM
« on: April 18, 2007, 03:40:42 PM »
Can anyone tell me about the work study program?

As part of my financial aid budget I was given the normal amount in stafford loans and some in Plus loans.  But $4,000 of it was budgeted under work study program.

I will be attending part time, but I had intended on working at another job for income.

Is there any way for me to not do this work study program and still get the full Cost of Living budget in Plus loans?

I need to work while attending law school to support my wife and of course me.  And to further compound the problem, I will be attending a school with a very high cost of living.  So I absolutely need to work, but not as a work study program.

Where should I go next fall? / To those thinking about NY tiny law...

NEW YORK   A man jumped to his death Friday out the window of a 69th-floor law office in the Empire State Building.

Police responded to the New York City landmark shortly before 3 p.m. after a 911 caller reported seeing a severed leg _ covered in a gray sock _ on the street below. The rest of the body was recovered from a setback on the 30th floor.

The tragedy in the 102-story building closed portions of the busy Midtown Manhattan street while the investigation continued.

Police identified the man as Moshe Kanovsky, a lawyer in his 30s.

More than 30 people have committed suicide at the Empire State Building since it opened in 1931, including a 21-year-old man in February 2006. The skyscraper reaches 1,454 feet to the top of its lightning rod.

The guy passed the NY state bar exam in Feb of 2003... didn't take long for life as a Tiny law associate in NY to get to him..  :(

If you ever find yourself in this situation, working at a tiny law firm situated at the top of a 100 story building, making $35,000 per year.. and one day you realize that law wasn't what you thought it would be.... DON'T DO IT!!

You can always liquidate your hoopty and downtown tent under a bridge, move to the beach and start your own private practice, where you call the shots and you decide how much work you take on.... Or if you just hate law that much then parlay your JD into another field that you do like... Things always get better, life is like a roller coaster, there are ups and downs, and sometimes those downs may seem to be endless, but alass you will see another up..

Where should I go next fall? / new BIGLAW associates..
« on: April 02, 2007, 03:05:05 PM »
suppose that you get hired on as a new associate (fresh out of law school) at a BIGLAW firm that mainly does IP work.

If your friend has a legal issue, would you be able to represent your friend in say, a personal injury case?

Are you even allowed to represent clients outside of what the firm hands you to do?

Does anyone know what the ranking of USD was for the past 3 USNEWS rankings?

I know that they are tied with a bunch of other schools for #65 right now..

Are they a school that is rising in the rankings?  And does everyone think that they will continue to be well regarded?

I know that they have been accredited since the 1960s, but there are a lot of other schools that have been since the early 1900s..

Maybe they are still gaining in strength and reputation compared to the more established schools..  :-\
