out of state.

i doubt i'm in, but it does seem a little weird since they haven't been rejecting people from the WL.

Wait List / UVa Status Change

Um, my application status has just been updated.  Has this happened to anyone else?  There's no way to find out whether I'm in or out until I get the letter via snail mail.

Where should I go next fall? / Re: What is Gainesville like (UF)???
« on: March 29, 2006, 07:00:28 AM »
I'm originally from Gainesville and there really isn't much to it.  The cost of living there is incredibly low (do not listen to anyone who says it isn't).  It has one or two of every major chain store/restaurant, but not much beyond that.  Driving in Gainesville is horrible during the school year, since the really smart Alachua County city commissioners got the crazy idea not to synchronize the traffic lights well so that people would get frustrated and end up riding bikes rather than driving (although I think they're on the way to fixing that).  Also, most UF students do not know how to drive, and there are a lot of them to contend with.

In response to all of the above: yeah, that's kind of the impression that I had of American.

Thanks, everyone!

Law School Rankings / American: General vs. Int'l Law Ranking
« on: February 23, 2006, 09:47:36 PM »
My pre-law adviser has told me that high rankings in specialized areas don't really make a difference, and I should try to go to a school that's ranked high overall, and not just in the area of law I want to practice.  I'm interested in international law (specifically in the role of the IGO in legislating/enforcing human rights), and I've read that American University is ranked #47 overall, but #5 in international law, tied with Yale.

Does anyone have any ideas about the discrepancies between general and specialized rankings?  Advice would be appreciated.

Wait List / Re: GW Waitlist

so waitlist basically = rejected?

I'm not holding my breath.  I've heard from several people that GWU's waitlist is huge.

Denials / Re: Most Obnoxious Rejection Letter
« on: February 23, 2006, 09:30:34 PM »
I don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but Georgetown's rejection letter was like, "At this time we are unable to honor your request for admission."

Okay now, I may only have a 3.4 GPA, but I am not quite stupid enough not to be able to comprehend the way the admissions process works.  I'm pretty sure the committee is able to admit anyone it wants to.

Ugh, how patronizing.  I'd rather they had written something along the lines of, "Dear Ms. Matthews:  We hate you.  We were so revolted by your application that we set it on fire.  Enclosed are the ashes.  Sincerely, the Georgetown Law Admission Staff."

Also waitlisted at GW.  I hear it's nearly impossible to get off of their waitlist.

(In unrelated news: this is my first-ever post on this site!)   :D
