Current Law Students / curves? i dont get it.
« on: February 27, 2006, 11:36:35 PM »
So ive been reviewing these threads and seeing people posting gpa's and talking about their schools curve.  the question i have is, does it matter what the curve at your school is for reasons other than keeping your gpa above a certain point for scholarships or other reason?  really i only ask this because since ever school seems to use a differnt curve does gpa really matter?  obviously students at schools that grade with a 3.2-3.3 curve have a distinct advantage of having a better GPA than students at schools with a 2.7-2.8 curve.  so essentially someone with a 2.7 and a 3.3 could have performed equally well but have significantly different grades.  Judging from this you would think class rank would be the only thing that really mattered but it seems like GPA plays an important role in getting jobs.  it doesnt make much sense to me.  maybe im wrong in my reasoning and understanding.  if you could clear it up i'd appreciate it.

Current Law Students / How competitive is the JAG Corps?
« on: February 27, 2006, 11:54:45 AM »
hey, i was just wondering how competitive it is to get a spot with the JAG Corps.  Either Navy or Coast Guard would be the top choice.  What are the odds of getting in with them if u didnt intern with them either 1L or 2L?

also if anyone has an experience with them, how did you like it?

Current Law Students / Future Potential and Rankings?????
« on: February 26, 2006, 08:19:40 PM »
So two legit schools are opening law schools this year.  Elon and Drexel.  I would say that drexel as the better reputation as far as a school in general goes but elon is a quality school too.  I was wondering what do you guys think of as the future of these schools.

Here's the run down of them as i see them.
opening up a traditional legal education program
seem to have good faculty coming in
will be the one and only law school in greensburg, nc
pretty certain to get accreditation baring some unforeseen major problem

opening up a 6-month coop program
have good faculty entering
will be competing against 3 other top law schools in philly and 2 to 3 more in fairly close proximatey
good undergrad reputation
aiming to have class of 120 students with an lsat average of 155

the two schools probably both have pretty bright futures but i was wondering what you guys think where and how they'll turn out.

its hard to say where they will end up ranking on the usnews report rankings.  i guess schools like UNLV which debute at 92 or something like that and Ave Maria which is projected to be somewhere in the top 100, possibly 75, has to make us think about the potential that new schools have that are trying to enter and start new schools in productive and positive ways.

i guess my guess would be that Elon will start out as Tier 4 and eventually move to Tier 3 but carry a good local reputation in the greesboro, nc area.

drexel is a little tougher, they are entering in a unique way with the 6 month coop program, so i think they have a unique chance to maybe enter the rankings in the top 100 or tier 3.

just wondering what you guys think.

Current Law Students / Re: transfering from Non Accredited ABA School
« on: February 18, 2006, 05:26:52 PM »
You think you are going to go from non-aba approved to T1?  Are you kidding?

yea, haha what a feminine hygiene product bag this kid must be. shut up.

i was just wondering, its not like a non aba is my only option but drexel has potential and scholarship opportunities.  i love you wonderful advice though,  thanks for helping me out.

Current Law Students / transfering from Non Accredited ABA School
« on: February 18, 2006, 01:42:48 PM »
so i was wondering what you guys think about the possibilities of transfering from a non aba school.  im thinking about drexel in the fall but there is always the possibility that if i end up in the top 5 or 10% of the class that i would look to transfer out to a T1 school.  anyone know what the possibilities are of transfering out of a non aba school?

oh and p.s. im starting to think the aba is kind of a joke since liberty just got provisional approval............liberty! wtf.

thanks though.

Current Law Students / salary and advancement
« on: February 15, 2006, 09:58:33 PM »
hey i was just wondering.  from the stats i see around it seems like the average starting salary out of law school is around 50-60k.  but i was wondering what people know about advancement and salary increases.  how long does it take for a first year lawyer to start to advance and get a bump in salary?  i just didnt know if your looking at 60k for 5 years or so or if there are some significant bumps in salary after 1,2,or 3 years.

of course you could always get that 125k starting salary.  but im just looking at the average.

Incoming 1Ls / classes adding another section?
« on: June 29, 2006, 11:25:34 AM »
rumor has it that my school got a lot more people to accept admission offers than expected and much higher than the average rate.  as a result they have blown past the size class they were shooting for and are now contemplating adding more sections to deal with the added students.

have you ever heard of this happening?  that a school underestimated the response from acceptances so much so that they had to add another 1 to 2 sections?

do u think its a good sign or bad sign?
