Distance Education Law Schools / Distance Law Schools... how does it work?

Okay, I am sincerely curious about this and curious what you folks have to say.

On distance law schools, let's say you wanted to practice in California.  (Not sure if you could practice in any other state, but let's just say california.)

How does the process work?  You take the baby-bar like the california accredited school folks do?  Then, you're eligible to sit for the bar?

I just realized this week that it's highly likely that I'll be able to sit for the CPA exam if I judiciously select my law electives.

Of course, I wouldn't be able to meet the professional requirements to be a CPA.  Nor do I foresee a situation where I would.

However, is there any circumstance where this would be a help?  I am particularly interested in securities law. 

Also, can professional experience count for both law and accountancy?  For instance, if I were to be a tax attorney (yes, I know about the LLM in Tax), would that count as professional years towards a CPA designation?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Law Firms / Intellectual Property Law if Not Qualified to Sit for the Patent Bar

I've danced around this topic a few times before, but I'm curious as to the prospects of working in IP if you are not qualified to sit for the patent bar.

The facts are these:

1.  I have an undergrad degree in Information Systems.  I have a graduate degree with an Information Technology emphasis.

2.  For those not familiar, computer degrees generally come in 3 varieties:
a.  Computer Engineering - from a college of engineering
b.  Computer Science - usually from a math department
c.  Information Technology - usually from a college of business

It's not unusual to attend a school where all 3 degrees are offered.  The first two, because they involve calculus, are generally eligible for the patent bar.  Information Technology generally is not.

So, my question is this:  it seems like IT and related issues are a hot area within IP.  Is it realistic to work in IP without being eligible to be a patent attorney?

I know it's technically possible, but is it something that actually happens?

Would be interested in any input from folks with firsthand knowledge or an informed opinion.

If you're an entering 1L or contemplating going to law school, you REALLY owe it to yourself to go out and talk to recent LS grads.

"It's no secret that the employment picture for law school grads is abysmal right now.  Frankly, I don't even think anybody is willing to explore the depressing realities for those who are graduating at the bottom of T3/T4 classes.  If I had to thumbnail, I'd say your odds of getting a job as an attorney if you finish in the bottom 50% of your T3/T4 are probably somewhere on the order of 1 in 5.  Frankly, I think 1 in 5 is still too generous, but it's illustrative...."
