So Nick Berg's father is a pacifist... thats totally valid. Ill let Ann Coulter beat him up for that, crass maniac that she is.

But Mr. Bergs views in no way change the fact that in my humble opinion, today was a great today for decent people everywhere. Ding dong the maniacal homicidal fundamentalist is dead dead dead.

got my pennkey stuff yesterday. going to start setting it all up this afternoon.

i also found a place- a bunch of guys i know (some med, some law, one phd student) have a big house on 42 and Walnut... or just off of it, i think. Its incredibly good rent so even though I wasnt excited to live with other people, it is hard to turn down.

anyone know anything about that area?

I live not far from there now--it should be a fine area, you're only two blocks from the edge of campus so its still pretty nice  :)  If you have specific questions let me know!

the area looks lovely from what i can tell from goolemaps satellite images. its also apparently very near a movie theater, and you can cut straight across campus from that end to the law school so thats convenient. how long do you think that walk would take?

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: why are Dells so cheap?

i would love someone who found me a laptop that meets the following 3 criteria:

1. It doesnt weigh alot. Def not more than 5 lbs. Its compact and isnt big and clunky.
2. It has battery life. Like a good battery that runs on its own for an hour or so, at least. It doesnt eat the battery within 5 minutes like my current otherwise-awesome Toshiba does.
3. It works reasonably well. I only need this for Word, Internet, pictures, watching movies and downloading music... nothing too hardcore. It just has to work.

what are my best options? As i am not looking for buy the top of the line 100GB amazing system, I am hoping to spend under 1000 if possible. I just want workable, small and light.

Wait List / Re: What's Going On With Penn's Hold List?
« on: June 06, 2006, 10:24:50 AM »
i think that email is very honest- they had a "hold" category, they rejected much of that category, waitlisted some and admitted a few. A smaller group of holds is still being considered- what they are waiting for, i have no idea.

i can say that, not knowing any of your #'s, the few ppl admitted off the Penn waitlist on LSN all had 167-168s and 3.85+ GPAs. Ie they were looking to boost their GPA without admitting anyone below their 25% mark. If you look at the few admitted to CLS' class from waitlist, they are also all 3.8+ with high LSATs as well. That is, they are filling statistical holes in the class. My guess is that the class is pretty full, but the few spots that opened had to be filled to even out whatver they were missing- minorities, GPA or LSAT or something else. Thats how post-April admissions work. (i have a theory that Harvard sets this entire thing in motion- as is evident by them admitting 25 off the waitlist off the bat, allll with very high GPAs, which trickled down to the rest of the T14 and beyond, with high GPAs being called to replace those that decamped for Harv)

in any event, i dont think youd be out of line calling the dean. be VERY polite, be VERY cordial and apologetic for bothering him/her, say outright "i do not want to whine BUT" He wont say "oh, youre in!" but he might give you an idea of how full the class is, how confident they are about taking anyone else, what it really means to be on HOLD and not wl... i dont think it can hurt as long as you come off as someone for him to pity due to this inconvenience, not someone whose an ass.

best of luck

Wait List / Re: What's Going On With Penn's Hold List?
« on: June 05, 2006, 04:27:12 PM »
i was admitted off the waitlist two weeks ago, and was told they were admitting a select few (as in single digits) at that time, and would only return to see how many spots were open sometime in late June. Im not sure how valid that info is- i cant BELIEVE you are still on hold with them, thats just so unfair and all theyd have to do is send you the generic waitlist email to right that situation. Penn Admissions has been AWESOME to me and others so I think you are a fluke- id pester them and point out how ridiculous it is already. That receptionist is correct in the sense that if you havent been shafted yet, its certainly a good sign. But i cant understand what the hold up is.

thats all i got folks

I was in Jerusalem. I was studying there for the year, it was my first week.
My mom called to say she and my family were all right (all in manhattan) and shell call back again. At that point I and she thought it was a really terrible accident.

i know this was controversial but its true- i found out it was a terrorist attack because i heard celebratory gunfire and cheering from nearby Palestinian communities. As I went back to my campus, I saw candy being handed out to childen. I still didnt know the towers actually fell until much later, and all the phone lines were down because the entire state of Israel was trying to get through to the US, so it was a LONNNG excruciating wait to hear details about friends and loved ones.

it was reallty strange being so grateful you werent near the event itself, but wishing you were there in NY at the same time. and it was also weird to have EVERYONE think youre insane for picking up and moving to jerusalem in the middle of the intifada, and suddenly have all new yorkers way more vulnerable and scared.

thats my story.

Wait List / Re: Cornell WL
« on: May 25, 2006, 09:54:59 AM »
i withdrew from cornell a few days ago. penn michigan and columbia seem to be snapping up a few students off their waitlist, and Harvard is out of control taking people, so i think cornells in a position to have lots of room.

best of luck!

Law School Applications / Re: Call from Harvard
« on: May 25, 2006, 09:45:42 AM »
i was told by some people at Harvard (very reliable sources coming directly from Toby-I worked for the law school during my undergrad) that as of Monday they were looking to accept 20-30 more people off the wailtist.  There still is a small chance of hope everyone.

Best of luck!

what is going on up there? Why is Michigan and Penn and Columbia taking a few off their waitlists here and there, but Harvard is accepting 50 right off the bat?? It doesnt make any sense. Why would their yield suddenly be so low??
