General Off-Topic Board / Re: Oil hits 100/barrel

weren't oil company profits--profit, not revenue--recently at an all-time high?  yeah, greedy oil companies couldn't have anything to do with that, it's all because of... the increased costs on their end.

While oil company profits may be at an all-time high, the profit margin of oil companies is not much higher than that for all industries and actually trails many industries such as banking, pharmaceuticals, and real estate, among others.  In addition, consumers in the U.S. pay much lower prices for gasoline than do consumers in most other industrialized countries, which see higher prices due mostly to taxes.

Here is a link showing the gas prices in a few select countries:

Divide the price per gallon by 3.7854 to find the price per liter.

I got a merit-based waiver and was offered the waitlist.  I didn't apply until early January, so I am not sure how that might have affected my chances.  The same thing happened at Penn under the same circumstances.  Anyway, I turned down both waitlist offers.

Edit: I also wrote all the optional essays.

Studying for the LSAT / Re: Skipping the Essay During Practice

In all of my practice tests, not once did I even look at the essay question.  As long as you do not blow off the question entirely on the real thing you will be ok.

Although some people take the essay very seriously, most people put a minimal amount of effort toward writing it and it doesn't come back to bite them in the rear.

Choosing the Right Law School / Re: Duke

I received $14,000 a year with a 168(average)/3.91 GPA, but I managed to negotiate the offer up to $18,000 a year.

As has been said, the campus is beautiful, with much of it having gothic style architecture; however, the law school does NOT have this style of architecture and does NOT really match the majority of the campus.  Also, the campus has lots of green space with a large garden area.

Interesting article on the cost of gasoline in industrialized countries.

I'm a double hoo who had sprint as an undergrad and verizon now.  Verizon works MUCH better - do not go with Sprint.  Sprint's towers are weak and they don't utilize everyone else's towers like Verizon does.  Generally speaking, Verizon is considered the best provider in C'ville.  I think All-tel is not bad either.

My wife and I have Alltel and we have been pleased with the service in C-ville thus far.

Acceptances, Denials, and Waitlists / Re: UVA Waitlist

I got a call on Friday and called back on Monday with an offer to attend UVa.

I took in my deposit yesterday since I live in C-ville and called Notre Dame today to let them know.

Congratulations on UVa!
