General Off-Topic Board / Re: Rhodes and Marshalls
« on: December 22, 2005, 07:35:30 PM »
Six of my friends (one from my school) have won the Rhodes Scholarship in the last two years, and I was encouraged to apply for it.  I did not because my GPA took a bit of a dip in the semester immediately prior to the application period.  If you want to apply, think through who you will have write your recommendations.  The Rhodes requires something like 8-10 letters of recommendation, and they better all be dynamic and speak to a different aspect of your personality.

In terms of knowledge and ECs, the Rhodes looks primarily for LEADERSHIP.  They want natural-born leaders; they seek the type of people who walk into a room, immediately size it up, and know exactly how to handle whatever sitaution is present.  My best friend who won it in 2004 was just like this -- he was the one who saw me in my freshman year, groomed me into a leader on campus, and helped me win my own prestigious national scholarship.

Your GPA is good for the Rhodes, but you need to know your stuff.  There are three tiers (lol, if I might) of necessary knowledge: within your particular field of interest in Economics, you better be GOD ALMIGHTY -- KNOW EVERYTHING inside and out.  Within the field of Economics proper, you better know everything although less in depth.  And finally, you better know current events and be just as prepared to speak about the election of Evo Morales in Bolivia as you are ready to speak about numbers and stuff (I am obviously not an Economics major -- Philosophy).

Ask more questions if needed, that was just off the top of the head.

Congrats all!  I heard that even if you weren't immediately notified about receiving a Dean's Scholarship/money that you are still eligible to get money later, as their admit pool clears up.

Politics and Law-Related News / Surprise! Clinton Spied "Illegally" Too

About as illegally as Bush:  In 1994, President Clinton expanded the use of warrantless searches to entirely domestic situations with no foreign intelligence value whatsoever. In a radio address promoting a crime-fighting bill, Mr. Clinton discussed a new policy to conduct warrantless searches in highly violent public housing projects.

Thanks for the heads-up.  I still need to do more research on the entire clerkship process.  Know of any good resources?

Thought this may help the OP re UVA:

What am I getting myself into?!  I mean, I don't mind preppy.  I even kinda like it.  But the fact that UVA Law has a Field Hockey Club and not a Men's Basketball club is a bit ridiculous lol.  C'mon, you can't accept the poor black kid from Harlem and then deprive me of basketball competition!  Softball is fun and all and I know the Cavaliers have been getting their asses handed to them in ACC basketball for some time now (go Terps!) but damn!  At least hook a brother up with a basktball club!

This leads me to date other nerdy-socialite overachievers.  Fit the bill?

Incoming 1Ls / Who Do You Want to Clerk For?

For the more ambitious of the LSDers, what circuit judges do you all want to clerk for the most?  I've already started looking into who I wouldn't mind clerking for, and trying to find clerks or former clerks I can speak to for insight.  Below is a list.  Yes, read it and weep -- a venerable list of the most conservative (and thus, most evil) judges around:

Priscilla Owen
Emilio Garza
J. Harvie Wilkinson
J. Michael Luttig
Karen J. Williams
Alex Kozinski
Michael Mcconnell

Anybody else out there (I'm just waiting for someone to mention Calabresi lol) or am I a nerd?
