You know good and well that I am right. You are deep in flame territory, b/c you are saying essentially what I am saying. Ask anyone what a 2.9 GPA means for someone's admission, and they will ask, "Can you get it up to 3.0?" That's the first thing anyone thinks. You are str8 flamin'.

I don't even remember what we were arguing at this point.

Sure, they could replace the junior folks...but what's to stop the entire FIRM being replaced by someone overseas?  If I'm going to save money on my legal fees by paying some young guy in India a quarter of what I pay here, why not replace the older, and even higher-paid, one?

For the same reason why you don't replace the older, higher-paid one with a young lawyer here: the work that's done at the partner level actually makes a huge difference.

Associate level: not as much.
Ah, but why wouldn't you replace the older, experienced partner here with an older, experienced person somewhere else?
In my experience with offshoring, the offshore crew very quickly came to resemble the crew over here that it replaced.  They had senior people, junior people, and even managers, eventually.  In our case, most of the senior folks had spent at least a year in America to get familiar with our practices, but there's no reason an "offshore law firm" couldn't eventually field a lawyer at every level, including the partner.

Because the older experienced person somewhere else doesn't have the experience of practicing here, which is why the experienced partners are valuable?

I actually really like Steve because he is a pirate and I think pirates are cool.

Disney or Somali?

They say it's good to question accepted truths to prevent them from becoming dogma.  :)

I'm impatient, you know.

You're actually very patient.  See, you didn't know that did you?

I didn't.  That's good to know.  I'll be waiting here patiently.

I think it's hard to argue for any kind of "principles" or "dignity" when discussing torture. Our country trains a large group of people to kill others because they are from another country. That's what war is. We blow people up, stab them, shoot them, drop bombs on them, etc. To me, using harsh interrogation techniques is just a nasty side note of this unfortunate reality. It's hard to see the logic in thinking its ok to disembowel somebody on the battlefield, but it's not ok to hold a wet towel on their face. It's all equally horrible.

It just occurred to me, btw, that this reminds me a lot of John Locke's rationalization for why slavery is okay.  "We can kill people, so we can do something less bad to them."

Well, I don't know if I agree with those words. I'm equally against war, torture, and slavery. I'm pretty sure you are as well, based on some of your previous comments. I would write more, but I'm feeling incredibly inarticulate at the moment. I imagine there are some people on this board who think I'm like that all the time in all of my posts. Oh well.

I guess that I'm more against torture or slavery than I am against war actually.  Against all of them in general though.

I'm impatient, you know.

28
yes but now is not the time.

Well how long are you going to keep me waiting?

29
oh yes you do.

I see.

Care to share anything else that I don't know about myself?
