Sweet! north sounds nice but it's so pricey.. but i guess housing in Cambridge is pricey in general. Maybe i shouldn't worry about what amounts to a couple thousand a year. Hmm.

btw, sorry YC about what happened with the lottery. did they follow up with any options for you? still guaranteed housing, right?

getting angry at the person who bumped you is kind of besides the point- the system was designed that way. if i had a number 1 and i wanted a specific room, i don't think i should suffer through "guilt" in addition to picking a room. Then again, it is something i was thinking about last night- not only is the system designed really poorly in that it would be difficult to figure out who you can bump (well. actually don't mind me, i don't know how it works exactly) but that you have to suffer through "man, does this make me a huge a-hole?" and add that to people threatening to show up on other people's doorsteps here.. i'm sure parly in jest, but really, the anger is misguided.

weren't you the one with a lottery number of like 5? if so, can't you bump someone?

I would if I could, but the room numbers weren't even on the list. I think that means they're already promised to RAs or other students  :-\

:/ yeah. i guess like the Hastings small bedrooms which are a nice deal for a huge bedroom.. i don't think any of those were available. keeping my fingers crossed but i'm expecting a bump when i get up tomorrow. maybe people off of LSD/xoxo won't realize you can bump people and just stick with what doesnt have a name besides it. We can only hope.

so the email was extremely misleading. Gah. anyways.. um.. i guess i can go to bed then and it doesnt matter when i choose a room, except it would be kind of a chore to try to bump everyone if all the rooms in a certain dorm are taken, trying to determine who has a lower number. Uh, yeah.

so shouldn't i wait until the last minute?

besides, how do you know if a room is available to you- does it only say it's taken if the room is taken by someone with a lower number? hmm.. yeah yeah i should go read the instructions again. . but i still want to know the answer to the above question.  ;)

We've received a number of questions about the timing for the lottery.

You may enter the online lottery at any time between Monday, May 1 at 12 p.m. and Friday, May 5 at 5 p.m.  If you have a lower lottery number (100 or lower), we encourage you to enter the system earlier in the week.  If you have a higher lottery number (200 or above), we encourage you to wait until later in the week to select a room.

After you have selected a room, please check your e-mail on Friday, May 5 after 5 p.m.  If someone with a lower lottery number than you selected the same room, you will receive an e-mail telling you to re-enter the system and select another room.  You will be able to re-select a room through Sunday, May 7.

More information on how the lottery will work is available here:

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Take care,

Anne Marie

i do think there's a difference in what the email implies and what the instructions imply or may leave out.

also. im really clueless as to which rooms are which in Hastings. uh, i guess i'll have to try to figure that out.
