Other schools exist??!?!

ah, were you one of the people who helped me through that bad thing?  :D thanks and yeah- that was me, and the yelling over the phone did the trick.  while i still think that delay did harm to some of my apps, i'm really happy about my plans for the fall ;) looking forward to meeting you as well.

my firms pay 115 and 140 respectively. that is market salary for the cities in which they are located.  yes, both firms are BIGLAW and they are both on VAULT's ranking of the top 100 law firms.

ah i see, i thought only the national market price was considered the standard for biglaw. my apologies.

i always thought steve would get in and was only surprised it took so long. :)

I thought you were actually doing your summer at a firm paying somewhat below market (90K?). i totally understand your reasons for going with something like that, but are such firms called "biglaw"? or did your plans change?

Law School Applications / Re: Asking for an A+?
« on: May 15, 2006, 07:14:19 AM »
Well, it usually balances out for students who get A+'s because they also have A-'s.

However, there are a few schools I know of which give out A- but not A+, which is just pure evil. Of course, schools wouldn't care about this if they weren't yield protecting bastards.

totally confused by the last sentence.

anyways, my school treated A+ as 4.0 but had A-s, so it was annoying- i did have a couple A+'s (in science/econ classes) but in many classes A+ just wasn't given out at all, since there is no difference gpa-wise in A+ and A's.

To my knowledge even if your school only gives 4.0 for an A+ as long as it is listed as an A+ on your transcript LSDAS should give you a 4.33.

this is true, however, as at my high school, where A+s counted only as 4.0, many teachers/professors don't give out A+s because they think it makes no difference. at least in my experience, i know of many that just excluded A+ from the grading scale.

well, i'd take LSD as a sample size with a lot of caution. for instance, i'm on the yale waitlist, and from the number of people who were popping up with waitlists on the yale obsession thread, i would never have dreamed the WL was less than 100 people (or so yale says on the letter). harvard is much bigger than yale, so probably has a bigger waitlist and will probably take a lot more people off it as well.

General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: HLS

I'm *assuming* that if we haven't received any email since around Sunday afternoon (indicating we've been bumped then we are fine.  The only way that they could then bump us and not let us re-pick is if they then went to our preferences expressed when we applied to  the lottery.

We shall see by Friday, I guess.

well what i was worried about are the people who didn't choose a room while the lottery was in session. since harvard said if people don't pick a room during the lottery their preferences will be used to assign them a room, i'm worried that harvard is going to apply those preferences to non-participants in the week it has had since Sunday. it wouldn't make much sense to me .. at least harvard should have done this some time prior to Sunday so that those of us that participated and possibly didn't put too much effort into choosing preferences back then because we wanted to actually weigh the options during the lottery won't get shafted. i know that i was in a hurry when i filled out the online housing app and i wouldn't actually want to get stuck with my preferences after hastings (i think i put north, but i've decided that north is too expensive for me). of course, the app said our preferences would ONLY matter if we didn't participate directly, so it wouldn't really make sense for us to get bumped after the lottery is over and have them assign us rooms by preference.. right?

i'm just surprised because i have a middle-of-the-road lottery number (151) and i still had a hastings room at the end of the lottery. as far as reports from LSD show, less than 200 had chosen a room by the end of the lottery.
