Where should I go next fall? / Re: St. Louis Status
« on: February 04, 2009, 10:23:49 AM »
Good luck!  Maybe I will see you around campus.  I would only recommend SLU if you are planning to stay in St Louis for atleast 3 yrs post graduation.  In STL its a boost for you, outside of STL the tuition isn't worth it.

I want to practice in STL... but am trying to rationalize it to myself paying that much $$ when I have much cheaper options at equally reputable schools.

I would say you do - probably a one in four shot if i had to guess.  I am not sure about part time acceptances, but I have heard of some people being admitted conditionally upon completion of a summer program.  I don't know much about that.

I was accepted with a 154, which isnt far off from where your at.  Something SLU keeps in mind is that a ton of applicants apply there as a safety for Wash U, and that a lot of students cant afford it.  So close to a 1000 offers equals roughly 250 enrolled students.

As a native St Louisian, I can tell  you SLU is very regional and having contacts in the local legal circles could make a huge difference.  Also where you went to undergrad (and even high school!) will be noticed.  What other factors do you have?  School attended, minority status, work experience, etc.?

Where should I go next fall? / University of Kentucky WL

I just found out today that I was waitlisted for UK, but that they were reviewing my application again the first of February and that if I wanted to supply additional information, I needed to send it off by this weekend.  Doesn't this seem really fast for a school that gets so many apps?

On the bottom of the page, it was titled "HighHold.doc"  Does this mean anything?  I don't know if that is the default name for waitlist letters, or if there are some apps that are 'preferred wait list' over others.

Thanks!  I guess I will be trying to scrape some compelling information together this week so they will let me in.

I am open geographically, and am looking to do something with Hispanic issues/intl law.  I could see myself living in STL or DC.  As far as expenses, I have a free place to live in DC and wouldn't have to worry about a car payment, so it would be really cheap.  I don't want to be a name-snob with schools, but I think DC is too crowded for an affordable school like UDC.

Like I said, hopefully I won't have to make the decision if Kentucky comes through, because it is both reputable and affordable...  And who wouldnt love living in Kentucky!

I have been accepted to both, and I know that St Louis is a far better school than UDC.  I have lived in St Louis before and could see myself settling there long term as I know it has a good local reputation.  I am worried that if I go to UDC my degree will be snubbed compared to the local power houses (Georgetown, George Washington, American, etc.).  UDC is so affordable and SLU is so expensive... is SLU worth the additional 25k a year though??

I am waiting to hear back from University of Kentucky and University of Louisville.  Really hoping UK happens, but I know it is not for sure at all.  Louisville is a good local school, and I enjoy the town quite a bit, so that would work out, too.
