Where should I go next fall? / UMKC vs Kentucky vs. U of L
« on: March 26, 2009, 09:47:16 AM »
I have been accepted to Missouri Kansas City (Tier 3) and have been deferred at U of L and Kentucky.  I will hear back from them this week or the next, and will be planning visits if needed, but I will need to make a decision quickly considering deposit deadlines are fast approaching and I need to sign a new lease wherever I end up.

So, to be prepared, I would like yall's rankings of the three schools (best choice to least best choice).  Here is some of my background:

Live in Missouri, but would be happy to practice in Missouri or Kentucky.

I am a military brat, so I would prefer to have a degree that has some versatility in allowing me to have good employment options in different regions.

I do not have one particular area of interest in Law, and am keeping my options open, but I do speak Spanish so will most likely want to do something using that.

Moving to Kansas City would be easier since I only live 2 hours away.

UMKC - COA $48,000
Kentucky - COA $54,000
Louisville - COA $56,000

I am most worried about employment prospects after graduation, and would be interested in working corporate law for a spell then working in public interest once I am financially secure.

I know that the rankings would say Kentucky, U of L, then UMKC, but am interested if anyone says anything different.  I have yet to have an 'ah hah!' moment at either school where I feel that this one is the right choice.

Thanks!

Where should I go next fall? / Best school to practice in Louisville
« on: March 24, 2009, 12:48:28 PM »
What school gives better employment options in Louisville?  U of L or UK?  I know UK is considered a better school, but I would think U of L would have a lock on the local market.

What does the OCI section on LSN stand for?  My guess is On Campus Interviewers

Where should I go next fall? / Waitlisted - Too late to come out?
« on: February 27, 2009, 10:00:01 AM »
So, I completed all of my applications last year and decided on leaving out the fact that I am gay.  It had little to do with my reasoning for attending law school, and I haven't been a huge advocate for the gay community.  I don't want to mention it just for the sake of mentioning it to appeal to a school's diversity, and felt this would be transparent.  Also, I didn't exactly apply to the most liberal schools as I live in the Midwest, and many of them are located in the Bible Belt so I thought it would do more harm than good.

That being said, I am on three waitlists (Nebraska, Kentucky, and Louisville).  Should I send in an addendum of some sort coming out?  I have worked with HIV awareness and services in the past, and coming out to my family was an emotional trainwreck that is still derailed, so maybe it would show some character?

I am torn, and am leaning towards just sending a run-of-the-mill LOCI.  Thoughts??

Where should I go next fall? / OCU vs. St Louis -- with a twist!
« on: February 24, 2009, 09:35:38 AM »
Heres the low down... I know there are a ton of posts like this but I am stressing out over here.

I was accepted to St Louis University with no scholarship (so 33k /year).  Live in Missouri, love St Louis, could practice there for awhile as I know SLU is strong in the region.  However, I am not bound to one place by any mean.  I would come out with over 160k in debt.

I have also been accepted to Oklahoma City University, and am a finalist for a scholarship program that would give me free tuition, free books, and around a 3k/yr living stipend.  Cost of living in OKC is very cheap, so I could come out near debt free for law school.  I liked the school, and enjoyed the city on my visit.  I think top third to maintain the scholarship.  Like I said, I am bound to no geographic location.

I know OCU has tough employment prospects and is 4th tier, but I was hoping that I could ride the name of the scholarship organization, as they provide internships and placement in OK and TX.  I am also waitlisted at Nebraska, Kentucky, and Louisville - and those schools kind of represent the happy medium of good employment prospects and affordability while SLU and OCU are the extremes.

Share your thoughts!  The scholarship at OCU is certainly not final, but I want to be prepared to move fast in March when I find out, as my lease ends soon.  The process for me has gone on so long, I am not really interested in applying to any other schools, and don't want to wait a year to reapply.

What does the 'index' column on law school numbers mean?

Where should I go next fall? / Hatton Sumners Scholarship
« on: February 13, 2009, 09:44:37 AM »
Is anyone applying for the Hatton Sumners program at Oklahoma City University?

Full tuition waiver + book stipend + $3,500 annual living stipend sounds very appealing!  Not to mention the low low cost of living and up and coming city.

And yes, I already know OCU is tier 4 and that anyone who graduates from there will live a hard, unfulfilled, unemployed, and dismal life, so no need to remind  ;D

Where should I go next fall? / University of Kentucky WL
« on: January 27, 2009, 05:44:38 PM »
I just found out today that I was waitlisted for UK, but that they were reviewing my application again the first of February and that if I wanted to supply additional information, I needed to send it off by this weekend.  Doesn't this seem really fast for a school that gets so many apps?

On the bottom of the page, it was titled "HighHold.doc"  Does this mean anything?  I don't know if that is the default name for waitlist letters, or if there are some apps that are 'preferred wait list' over others.

Thanks!  I guess I will be trying to scrape some compelling information together this week so they will let me in.

I have been accepted to both, and I know that St Louis is a far better school than UDC.  I have lived in St Louis before and could see myself settling there long term as I know it has a good local reputation.  I am worried that if I go to UDC my degree will be snubbed compared to the local power houses (Georgetown, George Washington, American, etc.).  UDC is so affordable and SLU is so expensive... is SLU worth the additional 25k a year though??

I am waiting to hear back from University of Kentucky and University of Louisville.  Really hoping UK happens, but I know it is not for sure at all.  Louisville is a good local school, and I enjoy the town quite a bit, so that would work out, too.
