General board for soon-to-be 1Ls / Re: HLS - which dorm to live in?
« on: April 17, 2007, 10:52:14 PM »
One thing to pay attention to: Hastings definitely, North probably (if memory serves), and even a couple parts of Gropius are going to be facing some major noise as they tear down Wyeth Hall and a parking garage. You have to sign a waiver that you won't complain living there, but I don't think they've lowered the rates to compensate.

Just makes my decision easier: my ranking was Gropius type II, I, then III. I'm coming straight through, so I'm not used to anything like luxury right now and I'd rather be able to meet people where I live than wall myself off.

You can put me down for Harvard; mailing my deposit check tomorrow morning!

I had you pegged for a lady. Go figure.

Me too, and I don't know why. I just know I was really surprised to see your self-tar for a couple seconds!

Hmm... interesting? I started out way back when trying to be completely incognito, so I was consciously trying to change the way I wrote (this started out as a reaction to BigTex-style horror stories, though it quickly became a fun diversion on its own), so maybe that's it. Then again, I've kinda let that slip over the last several months... But yeah, I am a dude straight up.

To be honest and stereotypey for a moment, I think it was the cat 'tar. There was a cat, right? Probably also the subconscious effect of "Ann" in your username.

Lol -- yeah, there were cats. But they were dumb internet memes, which I thought were more likely to announce me (accurately) as a geek than a girl. Anyway, maybe I'll leave the current avatar up, to mess with more people's sense of reality!

This thread turned a bit combative... Meh, I had a good time. I skipped Monday's events (based on the combination of no sleep after sharing a hostel room with a number of loud German marathoners, and an early flight home), so I had to miss Dersh, Fried, and Ogletree. Alack. Despite that, and the rain, though, I really liked Harvard. I will editorialize that y'all need to stop worrying about Gropius -- yeah, the rooms are small, but it's only nine months, you're going to make friends with your housemates, and housing costs are high all over town. I don't know, but I personally don't have anything against a short return to dorm life.

As far as meeting people, I don't think I met anyone disagreeable at all. I know I met Sab Saturday night, but I can't believe he was the only one. In case it helps for recognition, I was one of the only people there with a significant other. I was wearing a long herringbone coat most of the weekend, I sat in on Tribe and Zittrain's talks, and I went to the JoLT dinner Sunday.

Law School Applications / Re: Yale by April 15th?

I was talking to my parents tonight about the HLS ASW, and they mentioned that they'd just received a thin envelope from YLS. It's weird that they alone would send mail to my permanent address, but whatever...

It's gonna be cold...

And I realized my plane is leaving Monday afternoon. Yay, no reading for the mock class! Boo, no Ogletree for the mock class!

Financial Aid / Re: Anyone heard from CLS finaid?

They're sending award notices through the mail? Oh no, more high-stakes trips to the mailbox!

Financial Aid / Re: How generous is HLS?

They've certainly got the money to distribute. I'd say you're probably around their median for parents' income (and I'm assuming you're coming straight from UG?), you'll probably get a median-ish aid package.

Ogletree??? I'm so jealous!

Let me just say -- the pressure to actually pay attention to the assigned reading is considerably more intense than it was before I got assigned to a name I recognized...
